bad of policing. We need to know what good policing looks like.
Sheriff Jack tells us what good policing looks like.
Good policing is courageous because courageous officers do not act out of fear
for their lives. They act when they need to under real conditions. Courageous
officers are able to run into and face danger with skill and calm.
Good policing is calm because when one has real power, one does not have to
display anger. Good policing is calm because teamwork and good process means
confidence not panic. Professional is calm.
Good policing is community policing because when officers are part of the
community and the community considers officers part of the community, then
naturally police act in good faith.
To achieve good policing, Sheriff Jack hires for character and then holds
officer accountable to maintain standards of character.
To really understand and be a part of the community in all of its diverse
features, Sheriff Jack actively recruits in all parts of the community. In
every step from hiring through promotion. Sheriff Jack's officers look like the
community.
Sheriff Jack believes in constant improvement and transparency. He will tell
you that it is not fun to listen to all the issues and problems but he can't
fix what he does not know about.
Sheriff Jack is short for Ramsey County Sheriff Jack Serier. He continues the
traditions and polices of Sheriff Matt Bostrom, who led the transformation of
the Sheriff office, starting in 2011. In 2010, Ramsey County unelected a
notoriously bad Sheriff Fletcher. Fletcher is now mayor of Vadnais Heights and
snipes from the sidelines.
So you know me. I interview many people, ask questions, submit data requests,
observe and challenge authority. It is easier to criticize than to actually
acknowledge a good job. However, this good job has to be acknowledged.
An institution in transition always has bumps. However, we went from "convicted
of crimes" deputies to a period where new deputies did not even have
complaints. We went from buying expensive toys and storing them outside to
maintenance and care of what tax dollars have paid for. We went from always
over budget to on budget except for the year with an expensive murder suspect
hunt. And of course, jail is a safer place to be in contrast to a case where a
young person died of diabetes in jail before 2011. Most of all, we went from a
Sheriff single-person-show hunting gangs and terrorists to a calm courageous
community policing organization.
So not only does Sheriff Jack speak well but he also walks the talk, first as
part of the Sheriff Bostrom administration and now as the actual Sheriff.
Why should the Sheriff matter to us? The Sheriff's office runs the jails,
police waterways and serves the courts in all of Ramsey county. Any of our
loved ones can end up in jail due to circumstances, even without being guilty.
The Sheriff's office polices for the small communities that do not have their
own police force. Since we all travel, we all impacted by different police
forces. In 2018, we vote for Sheriff.
