I'm afraid Colin, whilst the Breweries charge extortionate rent to landlords,
coupled with Supermarkets selling cheap alcohol, the Pub trade will continue to
suffer.....

I understand from this link
(http://content.yudu.com/Library/A21n98/PubampBarIssue36/resources/56.htm) that
the Crown and Thistle pub on Old Road has been purchased by Shinder Pal Singh
(from Marston), who intends to 'consider alternative uses for the property'.
Just wondering if anybody had any information on what was likely to happen to
the building?

As one of the ward councillors I haven't heard of any plans as yet.

That is an interesting link James, thank you. It's illuminating to compare what
is happening at the Woolpack in York, a story on the same page as the Crown and
Thistle news. It has been taken over by real ale specialists who believe in
running community pubs. At another pub they run turnover quadrupled. This could
certainly happen at the Crown and Thistle, but I guess it probably won't...

With all the medical researchers who will be coming to the "medical campus"
(the old Park Hospital Site plus the old RHA buildings and land) over the
next few years, Mr Singh should keep it as the Crown and Thistle - the
favourite after-work watering hole of the doctors.
I feel Mr Singh would find it a profitable investment.

Do tell him that, June, because it would be great to preserve this historic
pub.
So many have been driven out of business. The Crown and Thistle has what looks
on the face of it to be a good position, in a large residential area, far away
from other pubs, with a bit of garden at the side. Pubs are over-taxed and the
smoking ban was for many of them the last straw. Yet they have a good claim to
be regarded as "community centres".

Julia - I am sure that Shinder Pal Singh doesn't need the descendants of the
British Raj to tell him what to do.
Have you read " Other Men's Flowers" - a book of poems selected and
annotated by Field Marshal Earl Wavell, soldier, statesman, author and
one-time Viceroy of India.
The last paragraph reads:
For all that loveliness, that warmth, that light,
Blessed Madonna, I go back to fight.
It was composed at Northwick Park on April 19th, 1943
And at the end of the Introduction to the Memorial Edition published in
1952, his son writes:
"And in the morning it was goodbye
The guard--orders of his tour of duty are in this book - in the brave, gay
lines of the poets he loved"
How petty do our quarrels, posted on the Forum or in other places, look
against the bravery of those who gave their lives fighting our wars.

The C&T should be protected, isn't it on the old Oxford to London road? Dating
back to the 1600's, I worked behind the bar there when it was still a pub
supported by the local community, a great place to work and socialise. Sadly it
grew less popular. Surley the history of the place could help the place be
resurrected and not just as a chain pub. There are a few other pubs that do
well in Headington without being just a part of a national chain, just needs to
win a good customer base and regular trade. Good luck and hope it re-opens.

I have a whole folder related to the Crown and Thistle going back to 2009, I do
hope its reincarnation is a more positive one for potential customers and
neighbours alike!

@ June. When I said tell Mr Singh that, I meant tell him what you told us about
the imminent arrival of all these thirsty medics. It was not a matter of
"telling him what to do". Just drop him a hint that you think it's still got a
future as a pub.
If his name is Singh, he is probably descended from the very useful allies of
the British. When their own leaders were being decapitated it wasn't just a
matter of fighting somebody else's wars.

@Julia: Mr. Singh is as British as probably you are. Clearly the C&T does
not presently have a
future as a pub. We don't need another empty business premise in
Headington.

I love reading about you lot arguing about the ever changing topics on this
site. As for Mr Singh, I dont think he is going to be a big drinker, so, I hope
he can keep everyone guessing as to his plans, any local person who is willing
to take on a site as large as the c&t in this day and age deserves a bit of
support from the comunity as long as its not a lap dancing club or night club ,
something that fits in would be good.

I tend to agree with Paul, and often get a good laugh out of comments on here.
When the opening recent post to this topic clearly stated
" consider alternative uses for the property"
it is amazing so many people assume it will re-open as a pub.

Quite so Tony...
... 5 minutes with Google has told me that:
- The gentleman is a trustee of The Oxford Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara
situated in London Road. Their latest newsletter indicates that they need to do
further work on adapting and developing the building; parking has been an issue
for them. Would they move if the opportunity presented itself? Who knows.
- He is a one-time director of Gill Construction
http://gillconstruction.co.uk/
... go figure... but I think the chances of any form of hostelry reopening on
the site can be regarded as 'slim' ;-)

Mr Patel - what Julia and I are trying to get across is that the Crown and
Thistle has great potential. What about an Indian restaurant plus a
non-alcoholic coffee shop and a traditional English pub bar? There would be
garden space for such things as outdoor bowling or for just relaxing in the
sunshine.
I think you misunderstood my mention of the British Raj - it was in fact a
compliment to Mr Singh and I am sorry if my words caused offence.
With the plans to expand medical and scientific research on land next to the
Churchill Hospital, there could be a strong customer base for the Crown and
Thistle.
I would like to hear from Mr Singh about how he sees the potential of his
purchase.

@Julia: Mr. Singh is as British as probably you are. Clearly the C&T does
not presently have a
future as a pub. We don't need another empty business premise in
Headington.

@ June. When I said tell Mr Singh that, I meant tell him what you told us
about the imminent
arrival of all these thirsty medics. It was not a matter of "telling him
what to do". Just drop him a
hint that you think it's still got a future as a pub.
If his name is Singh, he is probably descended from the very useful allies
of the British. When
their own leaders were being decapitated it wasn't just a matter of
fighting somebody else's wars.

Thank you June.
There is a modern mania for offence-taking. It has become the national sport.
I mentioned Mr Singh's ancestors since the name Singh is adopted by all Sikhs,
to signify (I believe) that they are one large family and have no caste system.
It might also be relevant as consumption of alcohol is not, I think, permitted
to Sikhs, so selling it might be frowned on too. I think it is best to be aware
of these things.
It seems strange that pubs survive in other parts of Headington yet the
Crown and Thistle has no future. Odd, in fact downright anomalous.

I acquired my love of poetry at Wellington Street Elementary School in Long

I would love to debate with you the power of poetry to change events. But I am

I imagine Mr Patel knows exactly what he plans to do with the Crown & Thistle,
and all we can do is hope. It is not a listed building, which means it is
unprotected.
It wasn't making money as a pub: Greene King closed it because it was
"unviable":
http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/9400157.Last_orders_for_centuries_old_city_pub/
It has now been closed for over thirteen months.
I would like to see it turned into a guest house, like the Coach & Horses in St
Clements. We are very short of accommodation in Headington, and it would
continue a tradition.
The old Titup Hall on this site was a coaching inn that could put up six guests
and stable twelve horses in the seventeenth century; but once the new London
Road was created in the late eighteenth century, it wasn't needed any more, and
the stables area was taken over for the first Headington Workhouse until the
new one was built on the London Road in 1838. The old inn was then demolished
and rebuilt as a pub (photo uploaded with this message)
The Flying Coach, the first coach to reach London in just one day, left from
Titup Hall on 26Β April 1669 with Anthony Wood on board.

Oops, sorry, when I typed Mr Patel I meant Mr Singh....
That sounds like a sensible suggestion. That would mean that the old building
could be preserved and a thriving new business installed, without spending a
fortune. There definitely is a demand for B&B type accommodation in Headington.

@ June.
It would be a very short debate between you and me on the subject of poetry, as
I can't see anything to disagree with in what you write, but a discussion
off-forum would be welcome. I haven't read that particular book but will try to
get hold of it since you recommend it. It sounds fascinating.
You must be exactly the same age as my mother who also loves poetry.

There was some work going on here this afternoon. 4 men seemed to be clearing
the car park. I can't find any planning applications or news stories related to
the pub so I'm still none the wiser as to what is going on. Would be interested
to hear what the future plans for the building are.

A few weeks ago the whole site was being surveyed. People with yellow vests,
theodolites and all the other surveying apparatus.
Given the background of the purchaser I still reckon plans for housing will be
submitted... doubtless I'll be proved wrong in due course! :-)

Application approved. Generally in favour of this, I think, provided that the
pub is ultimately put to some sort of use.

Fleurets are currently advertising the Crown & Thistle in Old Road, which
closed in 2011, as a pub to let:

If you register with Fleurets (very easy), you can log into that page and get
more information, e.g. the guide rent, which is Β£22,500 per annum. They cannot
give the rates, as they need to be reassessed now that part of the car park has
been lost.

Well that is jolly good news. It is one of Quarry's oldest landmarks,
If it does re-open as a pub, i hope it will have some new ideas for attracting
business.
And not pole-dancing!

We are a social enterprise theatre company and if we had the money we would
love to buy one of the pubs, keep it in the community and use it as an arts and

That sounds a nice idea, so long as it did not cause a lot of noise and so long
as the lack of parking could be overcome.
The Morris dancing tradition that flourished at the Crown and Thistle is a type
of theatre!

It wouldn't be too noisy if you picked the right show/entertainment. I agree
Morris Dancing is theatrical. Here is our website www.13ththeatreco.co.uk. In
Victorian times a lot of pubs were seen as entertainment venues. Also I see it
could be a community hub, encouraging community spirit as well as creativity
and creating jobs.
