The Independents referenced were spelled with a capitol "I" and referenced our
candidate Tammy Lee...so I will take some liberty to speak up.
Yes, it is very likely there will be a big I candidate this year along those
lines. Since this is a Minneapolis list I can promise you that he or she will
not be anything less than a strong 2nd in the city (and given the nature of
this year the whole 5th). Moreover, it has been my fair impression that
Independents of most sorts are quite libertarian on social issues. Of course
the real question in Minneapolis is how many Republicans we win over ;-) as it
was the last time around. I bet it will be even more.

I think it would be interesting, and most effective, if the Independence
Party ran a candidate who tended toward a more "Liberterian"- perspective
sometimes advocated in that Party. The main points being strong opposition
to U.S. miliatry invervention and civil liberties violations. The effect
would be advocating immediate withdrawal from Iraq, opposing militaristic
rhetoric about war with Iran, opposing the billions of dollars to Israel
which are used to oppress Palestinians and inflame hatred against the U.S.,
the suspension of constitutional liberties reflected by warrantless
wiretapping and Guantanamo Bay. (Such a candidate would be in contrast to
Tammy Lee who very conventional establish positions in order to contrast
herself with Keith Ellison whom she labelled as "extreme"). This agenda
would fundamentally challenge and therefore pose an alternative to both the
Democratic and Republican program, which the incumbent Keith Ellison now at
least goes along with and in some instances affirmatively supports. Althugh
a candidate, in order to have my support, would also recongize the urgent
need to reverse the economic equality in our society and insist on
aggressive measures to protect our planet from ecological destruction, I am
putting forth a suggestion that seems feasible for the Independence Party.

Hi Jordan
well said (have i ever said that to you?).
One little note, however. Tammy actually did not play it safe. The press
missed much of that. As an example she advocated publicly for a collecting
federal revenue through a "sales tax" (replacing much of the income tax
system). There was considerable progressivity built into the proposal for
income earners on the lower end (btw- our other federal candidates did the same
thing). The main point of that conversion was to drive up savings among young
people. What is most important to realize is that when she advocated it people
listened, rather than dismissing it as they would had one of the more
cynically-viewed and polarized sides had said it. While we don't have the
"power" factor, we do have the "innocent" factor, which means people are more
willing to listen to our ideas.
Her environmental positions were just as cutting edge. Everything policy wise
was about getting solutions implemented rather than posturing. They were fully
costed and respected people's intelligence. I wish that got in the news.
Ideology:
In the battle between the left and the right a very interesting thing has
happened. Any sense of federalism has been abandoned. The dogmatic left seems
to advocate for more government at all levels (I say dogmatic because I respect
enough Democrats and Republicans to exclude them). The dogmatic right seems to
advocate for less at all levels. The big I independents, and in fact many of
the small i independents understand and respect federalism. We clearly state
that government should be conducted at the most local level possible (but
unlike the Republicans we don't try to cut that local level too). Our federal
footpring in candidates and beliefs is far far more limited government than it
is at hte next level down and the next level after that.
Your input was definitely right on though.
Thanks

I am passing this on in reference to other e-mails yesterday that the GP may
have a candidate for Congress.
Quote:
Farheen is the only candidate who will be up for endorsement at the
meeting this Saturday. The 5CD screening committee will be presenting
the results of an interview and written questions as per 5CD rules.
Adri announced his intention to run for the US House at the March 5cd
membership meeting, but has not been screened as yet.
No other candidates have announced their intention to seek the 5cd Green
Party's endorsement as far as I know (being on both the endorsement and
screening committees).
For those interested,

Keith Ellison picked up most of the Green Party constituency last time by
running on a platform consistent with the Green Party and directly appealing
for Green Party votes. (The Green Party candidate Jay Pond's vote
percentage went from 6% in 2004 to 2% in 2006 which can only be attributed
Ellison's specific appeal to this constituency). Given that Ellison has now
established his commitment to the national Democratic power structure at the
expense of any sort of serious peace and social justice commitment, (I am
also unaware of anything Ellison has done on the environment) it would seem
to be incumbent on the Green Party to run a candidate to represent its
values.
