Are you ready for Autumn Daze's 25th anniversary? If you are new to the neighborhood or have never attend, this it the community event of the year. This year it runs from the evening of Friday, September 12 through Sunday, September 14th. Be sure to open the Autumn Daze Express which has probably already been dropped on your door step or visit: http://www.sainthelena.us/autumndaze/ Cheers, Steven Clift P.S. Get your popcorn, pop, and candy. My wife and I run the Bingo Concessions - so if you come down to play cash or Quilt bingo (50 hand made quilts), there is a good chance one of us or our neighbor Dale (and forum member) will be inside the little window off the gym. If you'd like to help us out, we do have a few two hour volunteers slots left to fill! Contact: <email obscured>
Hey, it looks like we will have fireworks at 10 p.m. on Friday night after the
fish fry as part of Autumn Daze!
So what is your favorite part of Autumn Daze? Those who have never been might
need a bit of convincing to check out what might seem like a "small" mystery
church event.

I don't know what my favorite part is, but I can tell you what my LEAST
favorite part would be: fireworks.
Fireworks scare our pets into becoming nervous basket cases for weeks
afterwards.
Fireworks create multiple point-source pollutions all in one package; solid
waste, air, water (with perchlorate, nasty), and noise. They use paper, wood
products, plastics and propellant for a one-time,
hope-you-saw-it-now-it's-trash display.
Public fireworks displays further encourage the use of illegal (in Minnesota)
launchable consumer firework materials which are available cheaply in Wisconsin
after the 4th of July.
Fireworks are a very non-cost effective community celebratory activity:
Hundreds to thousands of dollars are spent for 20 minutes of watching
brightly-colored solid waste stream into your groundwater. Then there is the
money and/or time to clean it up, if anyone does. Where is this money for this
for fireworks coming from? Can't there be something more positive and lasting
than fireworks for a church community to use that money for?

I couldn't agree with Tim more! I wrote a similar post about 4th-o-July
fireworks a couple months ago and I second Tim's opposition to shooting them
off again. There must be a better (i.e. cleaner, safer, less noisy, etc) way
to celebrate Autumn Daze! I'm glad that I won't be around for them... - A
I like the firworks and my favorite part will be the fish fry.
I am a ticked off as the next person about the illegal fireworks and the
kids that love to toss packs of firecrackers in my yard from their bikes as
they zoom past (3 times this summer so far).
However, this is a special legal professional ~15 minute firework display is
to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Autumn Daze ... the most amazing
expression of community volunteerism I've ever experience in Minneapolis.
The number of people who volunteer to make this happen and visit the event
is astounding. Time to celebrate with a special commemoration.
I live across the street from St. Helena's school ... the Sizzler starting
tomorrow .... and these will be a great introduction to fireworks for my
soon to be three year-old son. I can't wait to see his eyes open wide (and
I'll have a shoulder and hug if he gets scared.)
Of course, like last year, I expect the organizers to make sure the teens
disperse when the event is over (a group of volunteers dressed in old USWest
white clean suits with construction helmets and walked around as a big group
to let it be know monkey business like the year before wouldn't be
possible).

Worse than the fireworks (which only last an hour or so) are the trips of the
fire engine around the neighborhood, hauling hordes of kids with the engine
rumbling and the siren blasting. And that goes on for hours, all day long!
This year, like in previous years, I've arranged to be away from home most of
the weekend, to avoid the disturbance of the peace caused by this "Festival".
And it bothers me even more to know that my taxes are being spent to buy the
fuel for that Minneapolis Fire engine, and being used to benefit an institution
that doesn't even pay any taxes, and to drive us out of our homes in what is
normally a quiet and peaceful neighborhood.
Talk about "Raining on my parade!". These types of events are what bring the community and families together. Unlike the State Fair or the Renaissance Festival that costs $30 for a family of three just to get in the door, I am excited to participate in some good cheap entertainment where any money I do spend, will go right back into our community. Truth is my dog hates the fireworks too but she also hates the gun snap during track meets at Roosevelt. We learn to live with the small nuisances in our neighborhood in exchange for everything else we have grown to love.
