As someone who finds both Waitrose and the Co-op very expensive, I would love a
Sainsbury's or Tesco's in Headington (though I am not sure where it could be
sited...). If like me you don't have a car, you have to lug most of your food
home on the bus or bike from Sainsbury's in the Westgate.
I suspect that many people who oppose the idea of a Sainsbury or Tesco store in
their area regularly drive to out-of-town branches!

I also find Waitrose and Co-op very expensive and I don't envy you carrying
your heavy shopping on a bike up Headington Hill Stephanie. I think sometimes
there is a snobbery about not wanting a Tesco or a Sainsburys but having said
that, in posh Summertown they have a Tesco and I hear a Sainsbury to open just

I'd have no problem with either, but what I'd guess you'd get (given the
sizes of suitable store space available) is actually a "Tesco Express" or a
"Sainsburys Local".
These have much higher prices than their ordinary stores, and the way they
limit their ranges (because of available space) often favours the higher
priced, higher margin products.

Have there been vociferous campagins against a Tesco or Sainsbury's in
Headington? Where's the evidence of snobbery? The last time there was a
possibility of Tesco's (see thread on the Londis shop) there didn't seem to be
much opposition. I think Stephanie's point is the best one, where would it go?
When Somerfield's was bought, presumably there was an opportunity for one or
the other to move in there(or not?) and they didn't take it it up.
On a different point, couldn't you order bulky and heavy items online and just
go to Westgate for fresh stuff? Not trying to preach, I don't know anythign
about you admittedly, but just a suggestion.

It was the Co-op that sold the Headington Somerfield to Waitrose. I am sure
that Tesco and Somerfield wanted it too, but they would have been regarded as
much more dangerous rivals to Headington Co-op, which is probably why Waitrose
"won".
The only time I tried to order groceries online they never arrived, and it put
me off for life.

Do you mean the Sainsbury's outlet at the petrol station? That doesn't
really count! It was too expensive, and it didn't cater for anyone doing a
general weekly shop.
Stephanie, if your online experience was some time ago, it might be worth
trying again. There has been quite a lot of press coverage about online
grocery shopping and I'm sure some of the adverse comments have encouraged
the supermarkets to improve their service. I was put off for a long time,
but I took the plunge and ordered online from Sainsbury's for the first
time this week. It went very well, and was delivered on time and with no
mistakes or substitutes.

In our experience, Sainsbury's and Waitrose are excellent for online shopping,
Tesco's less so, and Occado [Ocado?] are ruddy hopeless.
In more general terms, Waitrose aren't that expensive if you go for their
Essentials range, and have a much better choice for most things; if you want to
treat yourself to some decent olive oil or something, or get people nice
chutney for Christmas you'll find them at Waitrose. THey are much better for
meat sourced from farms with decent living standards for the animals as well.
If I can't get ethical meat I'll just eat veggie so whether it's more expensive
or not is irrelevant.
IT always amazes me how many people wouldn't dream of wearing Matalan clothes,
driving a Kia Piccanto or using a five-year old mobile phone, yet are happy to
put up with indifferent quality from Tesco 'because they're cheap'.

I don't think I said there had been a vociferous campagin against a Tesco or
Sainsbury's in Headington ( see my post above) and the snobbery I was talking
about was not just in Headington but in Oxford as a whole. As for shopping
online not everyone feels confident to do that especially the elderly and some
people don't feel it's safe.

I've done on-line shopping twice, once 10 years ago when my baby was born
and once last week when I thought I'd broken my ankle and didn't feel up to
driving. And Anita is right - it has got better... I also got everything
with no mistakes or substitutes (unlike last time). But the trouble with
online shopping is that they don't do it with love, and I do. I shop
knowing (roughly) what we're going to eat on which night. I know I buy
fruit to dole out during the week, so it needs the longest sell-by date I
can get (even if that means rummaging in the crate beneath) because I want
it to last until next week's packed lunch box, and Sainsubury's don't know
that, and don't care if they do, and that is why, for me, on-line shopping
doesn't work. Because they don't love you or your family as much as you
love and nurture and care for yourself and your family.

THat's why we buy a few hundred quid's worth of tinned food, orange juice
cartons, beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee etc every month or two, and still buy
our fresh stuff on the way home from work or on a Sat afternoon when we're in
town anyway.
Not having to do the 'big shop' once a week is a real stress-saver, as the
online shop can be done sitting on the sofa.
I can see how pensioners wouldn't want to do it - my Dad is dead against for eg
- but then pensioners don't need to; they have the time to do a daily shop.
As a final point I'm not sure that opposing a Tesco's on every corner is
'snobbery'. I don't begrudge anybody who is genuinely hard up from shopping
cheaply, my first job paid 9k so I've been there. Not everyone in Tesco's is
grindingly poor however; check out the cars in the car park. I don't think it's
fair to call me a snob because I make some sacrifices in other areas to buy
quality food and ethically-sourced meat. I use all the main chains, Tesco's
included, but would rather see Waitrose expand, to give more people the
opportunity to try them.

One minute people are moaning that shops are empty and only coffee shops are
taking them up, the next they are encouraging us to shop online, perhaps this
is contributing to empty shops?
taking them up, the next they are encouraging us to shop online, perhaps this
is contributing to empty shops?
The problem is that the big coffee shops chains are *not* moving into empty
shops: they eye up the most suitable (= largest) premises in Headington and
swoop.
The landlord would not renew the lease of the previous business at Starbucks,
and now exactly the same has happened at Cartridge World. The proprietor told
me that he did not want to move out.
As soon as he had gone, planning application 11/02506/FUL was submitted to
increase the floor size of Cartridge World from 77sq.m to 126sq.m. by extending
at the back (with the new customer toilets being a clue as to what was
planned!). This was approved, and work has already started inside the shop.
Now Costa Coffee has put in three planning applications:
11/03052/FUL: Change of use from A1 retail to mixed A1 and A3 cafΓ©
11/03205/ADV: Two sets of internally illuminated fascia lettering
11/03106/FUL: New shop front
The first of the three is the important one, but the other two indicate that
Costa think they can knock the Local Plan aside.
I am trying to decide whether the Costa tables on the pavement of Kennett Road
(with a delightful view over to Iceland's carpark) as shown in 11/03052/FUL are
serious, or just an artist's impression.

Although I'm going to miss the quirky Cartridge World, I am looking forward to
having another good place to sit down, relax, and enjoy a cup of coffee in
Headington. Yes, we already have lots of coffee shops in Headington, but
frankly some of them could use a little competition to raise the standards.
There's a reason that the big chains are successful - they offer good coffee,
good service, and a pleasant environment. To be honest, I've been hoping for a
Costa to come give Starbucks a bit of competition.
Far better to have high quality businesses attracting people in to the area for
a pleasant experience, which might then lead to a more sustainable high street,
than to allow Headington to degenerate into empty shop fronts. We have a
healthy mix of chains and local businesses, and I hope we continue to focus on
what's important - making Headington a place where people and businesses want
to be.

On a related note... Has there ever been a butchers in Headington? I've always
been surprised by the lack of one. I would have thought a decent butcher would
do a roaring trade.

Costa obviously think there won't be a problem in getting change of use, but
following the Starbucks inquiry the Planning Inspector said it would be much
harder in future for a coffee shop to move into an A1 retail shop in
Headington.
And Jane Darke has added as a postscript on another thread:
"On the Headington local plan, the Councillors have been quite robust so far in
enforcing different use classes for shops etc and I don't see them breaking the
rules for Costa."
[It's best if everyone keeps to one thread, one subject (sending two messages
if necessary), otherwise the web version discussion will be anything but what
the heading suggests.]

Yes indeed there were butchers in Headington - though the last one wasn't that
good or well-patronised by the time it closed.
There was I think a picture of it on the famous (and now filled-in) Headington
subway mural. The County Council website which was intended (and promised) to
preserve the mural images in perpetuity for us has - sadly - gone!

I remember falling out with him over a poster he put up announcing to the world
that the only mad cow around here was his wife. When I said that I didn't find
it funny, he responded that most of his customers were mad cows!!!

On a related note... Has there ever been a butchers in Headington? I've always
been surprised by the lack of one. I would have thought a decent butcher would

Sorry for yet another message.
Oxfordshire County Council revamped its website a couple of months ago, and
every link changed. You can see the two subway mural panoramas, which
commemorate many now long-gone and valuable Headngton shops, linked from here:

When I moved to Headington in 1994 there were 2 butchers I think, a good
greengrocer, good cheese shop. But the butchers used to have lots of cheap
multi-pack offers on display outside and never seemed very appealing. It would
be great to have a good one in Headington. Jane Darke

Well said Roger.... I'm also looking forward to somewhere else comfy to have a
coffee! I think some of the independents would do well to put some comfy sofas
in their shops (if only they had the space!).
Can someone explain to me how "local" the local plan is. I mean, is it "local"
referring to Oxford, or actually as local as referring to Headington? Our
Labour Council will probably take 2 years to think about Costa and THEN listen
to public opinion and make a decision anyway....
At least Costa seem to be doing things in the right order and applying for
permission as opposed to retrospective which seems to be the in-thing
nowadays....
Its not competition in the Headington area itself killing off businesses, but
the competition from the out-of-town shopping stores combined with their
ability to provide ample free parking. Time for the decision makers to wake
up!

I thought that Neil's point was the one that Mary Portas was making earlier in
the week.
The 'High Street' will survive by being busy - that means being a destination
where you might move around, have a coffee, buy a sandwich and do other
shopping or access services. Headington needs to pull me from my office and my
home to do business there: most of the time it does and Waitrose is a very big
part of that.

An earlier post referred to online shopping vs using local shops. I regard this
as a false dichotomy. I'm MORE, not less, likely to visit a local shop because
of online shopping. Because I don't need to do a weekly 'big shop' in a car, I
am free to buy fresh produce locally by foot or on my bike. THe 'big shop'
items I buy in bulk online and have them delivered.
I do need to look into weekly fresh deliveries from the likes of Abel & Cole.
Maybe this should be a new year's resolution!
Oh and Kate: I was 'nurtured' by a clip round the earhole, occasionally and
judiciously delivered. It never did me any harm, and I'm sure neither did the
odd bruised banana I was told I was going to eat! I gather modern parenting is
somewhat different...

I agree with Noam that shopping patterns are changing. Because we have young
children, we too try to do our big shops online. However, we go to Waitrose or
Coop pretty much daily to pick up smaller items or fill the gaps before the
next big delivery. BTW, our experience has been that Sainsburys almost always
has one or two substitutions, but it's generally okay.
Likewise, to say that Headington doesn't need yet another coffee shop is also a
false economy. I believe that having a variety of coffee shops will actually
drive more traffic. Well, at the very least I believe having a Costas will. I
also think that having this particular coffee shop in that location will
benefit the farmer's market and make the bus stop more bearable. Imagine
sitting in the warm coffee shop waiting for a bus! (which has also been
transformed by being able to check on my iPhone when the next bus arrives!)
When I commuted by the Tube/Express in to London, I would wish on a near-daily
basis that one of the estate agents on that side of the road was a decent
coffee shop.

I'd sooner have another coffee shop paying business rates than yet another
"charity" shop that contributes no such rates.

I have to admit that despite being one of the councillors thst refused

go with a small baby in headington. There is plenty of room and a changing
table unlike the other coffeshops which are either too cramped or have no
changing facilities.
