Greetings,
I am curious about how people who live off the land as farmers and foresters
view the potential for increase demand for wood fiber as a source of heat.
I see this potential demand increase reflected in more firewood and more
chips harvested from the tops of sawlogs or, whole tree chipping of small
hardwoods that might occur within the context of land clearing
pre-development. Do farmers and consulting foresters see this as only a
good thing? Do the people who get paid to steward the resources see any
downside that needs to be considered and potentially managed? Thanks for
your feedback!
Cheers,

That's a good question, Bill, which I've asked myself in relation to
wood pellet production. As a farmer I have concerns about everything
that gets shipped off the land. However, I also know that the plants can
create so much from light and air that we're allowed to take quite a lot
before we tip the balance. I would like to hear from foresters on this
question.
As I understand it, biomass soon will be opened up as a major topic of the
whole forum. Therefore I suggest we participate as much as possible in that
wider discussion and reserve this topic in our caucus for development of
specific proposals or positions in our group.
Scott,
I agree with that. Do we discuss proposals using the 5 steps described below as
was discussed earlier today at the leadership meeting or do something
different?
1. We identify our assumptions about clean, renewable energy.
2. We then question our assumptions.
3. We identify proposals that we would like to make to the larger forum that
would address issues or implement strategies.
4. We reflect on our proposals.
5. We present our proposals.
Hi all,
I look at my land, mostly forested and often consider what the right balance of
harvest to preservation should be. Nowadays, I am feeling that all of us in the
good ole USA act in one spere of another like the FDA does in saying X% of
nasty poison is wiithin safety guidelines. I am very concerned that we do not
mine the soil to meet our needs. I also have had logger friends, even good
friends whose integrity I count on, say "Never trust a logger to do the right
thing...go visit the site often enough and randomly enough to keep things
honest."
We have seen a lot of high grading in new england, too.
That said, I am confident we can work out plans to use more biomass, but we
need to err on the side of caution or much of the life of the forest will be
come degraded.
I hope Bill, or some others who are foresters can speak to that.
