As a responsible long standing recycler I stayed with Magpie for as long as
possible but recently reluctantly quit them as I'm skint. Their service was
fantastic but now I have had to resort to the council's sub-service.
After completely tidying out my house I had unbelievable amounts of old
books and paper most of which I carried (at least 10 trips) to the local
paper recycling bin as I don't have a vehicle. I also had loads and loads of
heavy and light cardboard and a couple of kilos of old batteries which were
waiting in my hallway to be taken away recycled. As I've only one council
bin I used my old Magpie box for the card and batteries and put the two bins
together. When they collected the stuff they left the Magpie box contents
behind. Unbelievable!
As I can't keep masses of card in my house for another two weeks it all went
straight in black sacks and is now waiting with my other rubbish for this
morning's collection for the landfill. The batteries I will try again in two
weeks. By the way will the council recycle my Magpie bin?
I believe the council have now taken to fining people for putting
recyclables in their normal rubbish. Well I own up and look forward to
receiving a fine from the council.

I must say that for once I think the council operators were right. They
get into trouble when they collect stuff in Magpie boxes. It may seem
crazy to you cos you knew what you meant, but there are people who put
recycling out for both Magpie and the Council and the only way that
operators can differentiate is by the box the stuff is in.
If you need more recycling boxes the council will supply them to you.

Not at all "unbelievable" but obvious _ - The Green boxes belong to
Magpie and if you are not using their services any more maybe you should
return the box., I am sure Magpie would come to collect if it you ask them.
I use both Magpie and the Council service and I would not expect the
Council to collect the Magpie box - nor do I expect Magpie to collect the
Council box. . By the way if you want more Council bins you only have to
ask for them. As for putting all your cardboard in your rubbish bin - did
you say you were a "long standing recycler" ? ? Anyone "clearing their
house" might want to know about Brighton & Hove freecycle. You just post
what you have to offer - and in most cases someone does want it even
cardboard boxes !(and they will come to collect ) What about a bit of
constructive thinking instead of endless whinging ?

You may see this as a winge but there are some quite serious points. The
first is that a two weekly service is not good enough compared to the
excellent weekly service offered by Magpie. As I live in a small house
without a garden it is not practical for me to keep stuff for so long. Since
leaving Magpie I carry most bottles and paper round to my local recycling
point as two week's recycling takes up too much room in my house. It's only
plastic and card that I have to rely on the bi-weekly service and have no
choice but to use the council.
The other is that I'd read about people who'd been fined for putting paper
into black bin bags. I think one case was in Brighton but might be wrong.
While I would obviously want to promote recycling this kind of
'criminalisation' does not do the recycling cause any favours. It's not just
the 'customer' who has responsibility.
I have carried loads of stuff round to Shabitat and charity shops but
frankly Freecycle are not going to be interested in tons of card (not boxes
or anything remotely useful). Having masses of cardboard in my hallway at
the top of my stairs for another 2 weeks is not an option so the stuff has
to go in a bin bag. It's not something I'm particularly happy doing but I
have no choice.
As this is only a one off massive amount of recycling I do not want another
box to clutter up my hallway as I won't need it until my next big clear out.
As for getting Magpie to collect my green box well yes I should ring them up
but maybe I'll keep it and despite being broke, spend the money and start
using them again so I at least can go back to the many years of reliable and
hassle free recycling.

Did you contact the council and tell them in advance that you had a
one-off load of cardboard? Did you ask them if you could make an
arrangement?
I'm thinking that seeing the council can remove extra rubbish once-off,
they ought to remove extra recyclables once-off too. And as a gesture of
goodwill it should be free.
If you did contact the council then perhaps the next step is your local
councillor? I think the whole idea needs examining.

I'd not heard this. Can you provide a reference?
I'm moving house really soon, and it's entirely possible that our good
recycling habits (longtime magpie customer, until the council service
meant our road was no longer economic for them) might slip in the
process.
Will the council then take action against the purchasers of our property?
Cheers

It seems the black bag snoopers *were* from Brighton Council (see Argus
article below). Seems she's not actually been fined though but is protesting
at the hypocrisy.
I do find it slightly strange that our non-recyclable rubbish is collected
once a week but our recycled rubbish only bi-weekly. I usually have much
less non-recyclable rubbish and far more recyclable stuff. Wouldn't it make
more sense to reverse the situation and pick up stuff destined for
land-fills less often?

Recycler blasts fine as rubbish
By Lawrence Marzouk
A woman has vowed to fill her recycling box with all reusable rubbish -
including items not currently collected - in protest at the introduction of
recycling fines.
Sandra Washer, 61, of St Michael's Road, Portslade, said she has been
outraged by Brighton and Hove City Council's decision to introduce a £100
penalty, while failing to collect many items which can be recycled.
Earlier this month, the city council launched a scheme to tackle those who
consistently throw out too much rubbish and do not recycle.
Persistent offenders will be contacted by the council's enforcement team and
could face a £100 fine.
continued...
Currently, black bin bags are being targeted but powers exist under the
legislation to also charge the public up to £1,000 for not sorting rubbish
properly.
Mrs Washer said she was ready to make a stand, defiantly claiming she will
not pay if the council decides to fine her.
The mother-of-two said: "I put it in the box if it has the recycling logo
on; egg boxes, margarine tubs, juice cartons. How can they not take
everything that is recyclable?
"They say that they are not reaching their recycling target but that is
because they do not take everything that is recyclable.
I do not think the fines are right.
"If they do not take it from the box, I will put it back in. They can try to
fine me but they wouldn't get their money."
A recycling target of 25 per cent has been set for this year but despite
improvements, the council is still four per cent down.
A council spokeswoman said that fines were targeted at those dumping
excessive numbers of black bags.
She said: "The council does not want to discourage recycling. When there is
extra recycling we collect, as we want to encourage residents to do as much
as they can.
"However, currently there are some materials we cannot collect due to lack
of space on the vehicles. That is one reason a materials recovery facility
is being developed because it will allow large quantities of recycling to be
sorted.
"It will mean that all materials can be mixed on the vehicle, rather than
separated out as at present, so that more items, like the cartons, can be
collected.
"We would ask residents to bear with us and not put out items that we cannot
currently recycle, but continue to recycle as much as possible of the
materials we are able to process."

I'd not heard this. Can you provide a reference?
I'm moving house really soon, and it's entirely possible that our good
recycling habits (longtime magpie customer, until the council service meant
our road was no longer economic for them) might slip in the process.
Will the council then take action against the purchasers of our property?
Cheers
