a jog down there to see how bad the mudslide was this time, imagining another
one or two year blockage.
Surprise. They were removing the road block signs and allowing all traffic,
pedestrians, joggers and bikers through. There was nothing on the road. But I
stopped to talk to one worker who pointed out that the embankment to the right
of the 2014 mudslide site had either slipped some or gave some evidence that it
was loose. So you will see concrete barriers lining the west side of the West
River Road at that spot - presumably to block any mudflow onto the parkway.
Lauri and I have lived here in Seward for more than 28 years. Other than the
big 2014 mud slide I don’t remember any other mud slides along the River Road.
Are these happening because: 1) we are getting more ground soaking rain as
well as larger amounts of rain over a short time; 2) the buildings at the top
of the embankment ( hospital, university, etc ) are dumping water from rainfall
onto those embankments thus soaking them and weakening them; 3) the trees that
anchor the embankment are weakening or aging; 4) all of the above? Just
wondering…
