Wonder which name goes first...likely St Anthony Parkway...but should renaming
be as easy as 6 votes...8 out of 9 would be my suggestion so we don't end up
embarrassed by a name bought by say a wealthy businessman who 20 years later is
found to have been an embezzler or a pedophile.

Fascinating! How since 1882, the Park Board has had the ability and
authority to blithely name parkways and parks in Minneapolis with no
problem. But suddenly, commissioners now claim their attorney advises them
to add a new ordinance that permits six of them, or more, to name or r-name
parkways. Looks to me like they're trying to open the way to eliminating
all remaining vestiges of John C. Calhoun, to start with.

All, ostensibly, to have "Dynamic parks that shape city character and meet
diverse community needs."

Doesn't the Park Board have better and more constructive things to do? Talk
about a solution in search of a problem (one of my favorite contemporary
cliches). I wonder how much of our city's history the instigators intend to
demolish.

The Park Board should not be in the business of creating or maintaining
parkways. Give that to Minneapolis Public Works. While we're at it, we should
disconnect some of the lengthy parkways that have become commuter car sewers
such as West River Road or Minnehaha Parkway.

The City is responsible for plowing and maintaining the parkways and any PW
infrastructure underneath. The only thing they aren't responsible for is
rebuilding them. In exchange the MPRB has the responsibility for all public
trees in the city.....which with all the boulevard trees in town has been an
expensive undertaking.

When the recessions hit, government trees and roads...heck maintenance in
general went to heck. The MPRB started a resurgence of tree planting and when
I served we changed - behind the scenes- the unwritten rule that people had to
opt in to get a new boulevard tree. Now you have to say something if you do
not want a tree. Thus we also had to buy more trees and pay for more stump
removal...those actions were a major part of each budget.

Unfortunately the same was not true of the parkways on the city's part. They
were going to leave parkways out of the 20 year roads plan. Meanwhile they
have turned the parkways into feeder streets creating even more wear and tear.
When we voted to fix Parade Road the price tripled because it was so bad it
needed replacement not just a mill and overlay.
What we need is for the city to maintain the parkways like they maintain other
feeder streets so the aren't so poorly maintained. I need my 4 wheel drive
vehicle to take St Anthony Parkway* and Stinson Parkway* to get to and from
work, since that route avoids the at grade rail crossings (a different
discussion).
* to be renamed with out any required public process per the new ordinance
coming before the board on Wed. if passed.
