Now that we've passionately unleashed on Lake Hiawatha, I'd like to take a dip
in another topic.
Is our neighborhood more of a tulip or daffidoils neighborhood?
Here is the idea. Find a bulk provider of hardy bulbs this fall. Get 100 or
more neighbors to agree to buy a dozen at a normal price and donate the extra
dozen to planting in public spaces around the neighborhood. So 100 participants
would get us 1200 bulbs to "share."
So if we become the most bulbulious neighborhood in town, what flower says who
we are?
Also, can we actually donate bulbs or plant them say around park signs at Lake
Hiawatha or naturalize a cluster or three along the light rail, etc.? Or would
distribution need to more of a night-time affair? ;-)

Daffodils! We're in.
Also, can we get our cameras out and take a new, GREEN picture of the SE sign
for our front page? The winter is gone, and I'd love to see a spring shot of
the sign to share with the world. I'm sure Steve would
welcome some choices from us.... just an idea.

We are in but how about something completely different. When I was a kid in
Bloomington, MN we had Siberian Squill,
http://www.hort.wisc.edu/mastergardener/Features/bulbs/scilla%20siberica/scilla%20sibirica.htm,
in the grass in the front yard. They smell like purple candy but they only
bloom for a week or so first thing in the spring. I moved some Siberian Squill
to our backyard here where they have bloomed and lost their petals before our
daffodils and tulips started flowering.
The US Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center has some information about
bulbs for our region,
http://www.bulb.com/templates/dispatcher.asp?page_id=northerncentral. A bunch
of Alliums would be pretty cool.

I prefer the daffodils, though I like the tulips and squill, too. I believe
daffodils tend to bloom earlier and propagate more readily than tulips. If we
plant the bulbs in areas where the city mows the grass, later bulbs might not
complete their blooming cycle before the first mowing. Whatever flower is
chosen, I'm happy to help make this idea happen-- thanks for suggesting it,
Steven.

The idea I shared last spring was to see if a bunch of folks would like to
pool in together and buy a bunch of bulbs in bulk - for every ten we'd order
we'd donate/plant ten in various public places around our neighborhoods.
For example if 25 of us pay $25 each for 20 high quality bulbs to plant in
our own gardens, we'd have 500 bulbs to donate to a couple public sites in
our area.
A potential source (their catalog was recommended to me by Arboretum staff)
for a good mix:
http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/?sku=47-0110
Unfortunately, I don't have a spare minute these days, so someone would need
to volunteer to coordinate this (we can use a tool like
http://www.thepoint.com to gather interest and money -quickly-) and if we
really want to plant bulbs publicly (perhaps Sibley and Hiawatha Park this
year) someone would need to get permission.

Joyce has agreed to coordinate and promote this! Thank you Joyce.
To do my part, I've set up a simple website where 25 of us can pledge $25
dollars, then receive 20 quality mixed daffodil bulbs to plant in your own
yard.
The system will securely register your credit card and ONLY when we reach 25
participants will you be charged. We will then put in a bulb order ASAP.
So in the next five days - by next Monday night - we need 25 determined
daffodil doers to make it a go. Pledge here:
http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/daffidols-for-standish-ericsson-neighborhood
This year we will go with Brent and Becky's reliable "Perennial Daffodil
Mixture" that blooms year after year:
http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/?sku=47-0110
Cheers,
Steven Clift
P.S. The biggest question is whether we can get permission to plant some of
"extra" 500 bulbs in Hiawatha and Sibley parks. I'd like suggest under the tree
where the wood chips are very near the Hiawatha Park sign. If we have trouble
getting permission, each person ordering could plant the 20 extra bulbs in
front of the willing home of an elderly neighbor or in a visible place needing
an uplift not on their own property or boulevard.
P.S.S. Hey there garden fans, the new Frattallone's Ace Hardware -
http://www.frattallones.com - at 3915 East Lake is selling out a huge
collection of Bailey's, Monrovia, etc. perennials and shrubs for %50 off. You
could tell that few have discovered their stock - so I couldn't help but pick
up two shrubs for the side of the house and three new plants to stick on the
boulevard. I normally wouldn't post something like this, but a good deal is a
great deal if we all get to enjoy each other gardens.
