Got up this morning and turned on the tv , hoping to see if schools had a late
start or what. Channel 4, and what do I see but Frank Bibeau talking about
Icwa. Seems a couple in Utah had a child they were caring for and wants to
adopt, whose mother is enrolled in Leech Lake. Leech Lake apparently assumed
jurisdiction and remanded the child be returned to the tribe.
What is wrong with this picture???
Indian Child Welfare Act is federal law, it was passed in 1978 and it states
clearly all the steps needed to place an Indian child and gives the tribe the
right to exclusive jurisdiction. I have no problem with that.
But some one broke federal law, did not follow the act and now as a results we
have a non Indian couple in Utah standing up trying to play the role of the
victim here . In all actuallity only in American, can you break the law
{providing you are the right color or assume white priviledge} and then stand
up and scream the Indians are doing you wrong. Playing on the emotions of the
people . What a heart wretching story, tearing this "family " apart. What a
crock.........
If anyone had any sense they would know that if the law were followed there
should not be any situations such as this occuring. NOT NOW , not ever again.
And oh by the way if people are going to talk about Indians they should at
least find out what they are called. They referred to The leech Lake Band of
OGEEBEWA {phonetically spelled with long ee's.]
Meanwhile I say we should celebrate this child coming home, better now then
20-30 years from now saying" why didnt you want me? who are my relatives ?
