I was honored and touched to get the vote of confidence from the Ward 2 DFL
convention delegates at their convention last weekend, as I have been by
Marcia's, Connie's posts and several of the other subsequent posts about the
convention. It has been a real privilege to serve and represent all the amazing
people of the Second Ward on the Minneapolis City Council these past 11 Ā½
years.
It is inspiring to serve a community so full of compassionate, open-minded and
engaged people, who share a commitment to making this a more just, inclusive
and loving place for everyone.
There can be no doubt that we are living in turbulent times. This makes it
even more important that we work together now and be committed now to making
progress where we can. And I believe that at the city, local level is one place
where we can do that.
I hope we can make a Minneapolis a city where all of us have decent housing,
meaningful work, quality schools, rich cultural experiences and a safe, healthy
environment within which to enjoy our lives and raise our families.
Let's fight climate change while sustaining our environment, creating green
jobs and cleaning up our soil, water and air.
Let's dismantle institutional racism and close the racial and economic
disparities in health, housing, education, wealth, employment, and the criminal
justice system.
Let's forge a more just and durable local economy that supports small,
independent and cooperative businesses, provides people with meaningful work
with fair compensation, decent working conditions and the right to organize at
the work place.
Let's prioritize peopleās well-being and make sure that our public spaces,
housing, institutions and transportation system work for all ages, birth to
death, 8 to 80.
And let's reject the politics of division, bigotry, hate, and fear and fight
for the rights, freedoms and interests of all members of our community, no
matter our color, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality, sexual orientation,
or status as a refugee, citizen or immigrant.
These are turbulent times, but they are also inspiring times when more and more
of us are standing up ready to work harder together for a better future. I am
as committed and energized as ever and I hope that you are too. We can't do
this alone.

Subject: Re: [Mpls] 2nd Ward DFL convention:
As Sheldon Mains pointed out, this will be the third election cycle in which
the Second Ward DFL Convention has chosen not to endorse against Cam Gordon
and, in addition, to pass a resolution stating support for Cam continuing to
represent the ward on the Minneapolis City Council. If you look at the
general election in the last two city cycles, this clearly is representative of
DFL'ers who live in the ward. And, my guess is this will be the case again
this year.
The voters in the precincts comprising the Second Ward vote extremely heavily
for DFL-endorsed candidates for other offices, ranging from city boards to the
legislature to president. However, none of those DFL voters came forward in
either of the last two city elections to challenge Cam, and they did not vote
in any significant numbers for either his respective Republican or Socialist
Workers Party challenger. Cam won in 2009 with 84 percent of the vote; in
2013, he won with 87 percent.
Connie Sullivan perfectly captured the type of council member Cam has been. He
has both represented and taken leadership roles on the social, economic and
environmental justice issues supported by the vast majority of his
constituents. He has provided excellent constituent services. He has been
collaborative and transparent in everything he has done. As a result, when a
poll was taken this February to see if Cam was vulnerable, the response was
that ward residents strongly support Cam continuing to represent us. The poll
also engendered strong support for Cam from a number of DFL members of the
Council.
This quote from a Star Tribune article on the poll might explain another aspect
of Cam's popularity: ā 'Hopefully people think that Iām doing an all right
job,' Gordon said. 'But Iām sure that thereās room for improvement.' ā
I've lived in the Second Ward for 53 years, and I've been active in DFL
politics for just about as long. I spent 28 years of my professional life
working for the DFL at the State Senate. My husband, Lee, represented large
parts of the Second Ward as an-11-time DFL-endorsed member of the State House,
from 1979 to 2000, and in one of those elections his opponent was Cam Gordon.
I am proud to be represented at City Hall by Cam; I support the action taken by
the Second Ward Convention; and I will be casting my vote again this year for
Cam. Oh, and P.S.: Lee says ditto for him.
