I was recently unsuccessfully involved in a resource consent hearing for an
extension of trading hours of the hotel at 1 Riccarton Road (previously
'Nancy's Pub') Because this hearing was about the possibility of noise
disruption due to such extension of hours only the very immediate neighbours
were allowed to make submissions. The hearing was a whole day affair, with
eight objectors, moteliers, shop keepers and three residents, one of which was
myself. Basically the liquor trade v the little people.
The local residents association representing the broader community around the
hotel had gathered some 70 objections, but the hearing deemed those sumissions
unacceptable, because they were outside the immediate area. The objection
these folk tried to make was simply that they did not want any extension of
trading hours in this residential area.
Needless to say we, and the wider community were unsuccessful, the extension
was granted. If this is the situation which is being repeated all over
Christchurch, and the country as a whole, is it any wonder we have problems
with liquor consumption. We all wonder just what rights we have as rate paying
residents.
