Months back, I said this was going to happen. With or without the proles'
consent.
This article states that *"Rank (the company who will own it
all), understands the responsibilities that come with running casinos right
across the country. Wherever we have a casino we are aware of our social
responsibilities. We have been highly active in Newham in engaging with
community stakeholders such as church and faith groups, charitable
organisations as well as local businesses. "
*I wonder which Church and Faith Groups and Charities have been consulted.
Certainly none of the charities and faith groups I work with even know about
Rank or the 'consultation'.
*"These meetings have provided a useful starting point for building
relationships and understanding between us and the groups who have their
communities' best interests at heart. By listening to their concerns we have
been able to discuss some of the general misconceptions relating to casinos
and take on board their suggestions as to how a new casino can be best
prepared to deliver its social responsibilities."*
Communities best interests? Social responsibilities from a casino? How?
What is certain is that a super casino will bring in punters (and
money) from outside the borough and even outside the country. What is not
certain that gains made will belong to the people employed in the casino and
affiliated businesses will be Newham residents. I'm willing to bet(!) that
most sufferers - from gambling addiction and other gamling related social
problems will be very Newham.
Now all we need is a very large place to pray.
