As a very occasional reader of this forum, I remember that Paul Kuettel was an
occasional poster. As an employee at the school where his kids attend, I found
out that he died Sunday. His blog has a lot of info about his illness and
having been on a waiting list for a liver transplant, but I don't know any
details of his final days.
Whether you ever agreed with him politically, he was an interesting read,
especially through his struggles with alcoholism and the illness which
followed. At one point he decided not to edit/delete his posts once posted,
though some were clearly influenced by physical pain and medication. But one of
his reasons for writing was that he knew his life was not going to be a long
one, and he wanted to get as many thoughts and experiences recorded for his
kids to read when he was gone.
Just thought you might like to know.

I rarely agreed with the Wog, but his willingness to speak his mind and his
enthusiasm for debate and discussion was inspiring. His commitment to the idea
of talking and arguing and working through our differences was to be admired.
My condolences to his family and friends.

That is sad to hear. I've always appreciated Wog's wonderful sense of
humor and writing on the various E Democracy lists.
Paul is one of the kindest people I knew. The last time I saw him was
at the MOB gathering at Keegans.
Folks can check out Wog's blog:

Paul told me he wrote the blog, partly to leave something behind after
he died.
Here's Wog's brief description of himself:
PK
Location: Falcon Heights, Land o' Lakes n' Liberals
"Besides being a writer par médiocre, I'm a basically decent sort,
albeit flawed. Tolerated by 3 perfect teens and a downright saintly
wife of 25 years."
I have always thought Paul was much more than mediocre in his writing ability.

Wog will be deeply missed, his wit and way with words was uncanny.
Watch the blogosphere fill with memorials. I started one, but it was tough,
so there isn't much there yet.
Cheers, Wog!

Paul was a great guy who cared a lot about the people and the world around
him.
Politics doesn't matter a bit compared to being a great guy. That's all
that counted to him, and that's all that should ever count to anyone.
Best to you, Paul the Wog!

I am touched by the nice comments about the Wog. It makes me realize that my
initial posting was rather emotionless. I met him once, corresponded a few
times, but his writings made me feel like I knew him better. All a mirage,
though, and now I feel regret I didn't meet him for trivia once when he
e-mailed an invite. I understand he was pretty good at the trivia.
In the past hour or so, his obit finally hit the web:

Thanks, Tony, for letting us know about Paul's passing. I'm afraid I
was totally oblivious to Paul's kidney disease so I was very surprised.
I mostly knew the Wog through exchange of posts here and elsewhere in
cyberspace. I was struck by his unique perspective and have to admit
I scratched my head more than once trying to reconcile some of his
positions on various things. One thing which we shared is a common
fascination with "sporting" vehicles although I could never convince
him that Miatas are real sports cars nor could he convince me that a
Merkur was a true sports car if it didn't have a fold-back top (grin).
We finally met at a get-together at Tim Erickson's and shortly after
I became forum manager here. He promised he'd behave for me after
discovering my son teaches at Cretin-Derham Hall -- and never broke
that promise.
My condolences to Paul's wife, children and family. We'll all miss him.

Paul and I spent many a year and many a post sniping at each other's
politics, but with the sort of devilish humor only Paul could dish. I
considered him a friend and a colleague in political junkie-dom.
I, too, was blithely ignorant of Paul's liver condition and I'm sorry his
body could wait no longer for a replacement. Much too young - for his family
and for all of us.
Best wishes to those near and dear to Paul.

Paul and I covered each others' sixes for...dang,
close to a decade, here, on these E-Democracy forums.
We made great sport of competing amongst ourselves to
see who Terrell Brown could suspend more often, for
the skeeziest of motives; Paul won, of course.
He kept his sense of humor about him, even the last
time I saw him, in the last two months or so.
In all seriousness - as I've followed the course of
his illness, I hoped, like everyone that knew and
cared about him, that he'd make it far enough up the
queue for a new liver in time. My college choir
director received a liver transplant in the early
eighties (he is in fact the longest-lived recipient in
the world), and the procedure is truly miraculous; I
hoped intensely to see Paul get the new lease on life
that it would have afforded him.
I urge you to direct your thoughts, prayers, or
whatever it is you believe in to Paul's wife Laura,
who has stood by Paul for all these difficult years
with the kind of grace that you hope and pray you can
find in yourself, as well as their kids.
And take this opportunity to make sure you're a donor;
your healthy liver (drink less, people!) can save a
couple of lives thanks to the new partial-liver
transplants.
While the American Liver Association is not the most
effective of charities, the Minnesota Medical Research
Foundation is highly regarded, and works in this areas
(among many, many others).

I'm sure they could put a donation to good use.
