Now with toddler I'm a regular user of Greville Smyth. Being a bit out of the
loop, ca someone up date me on the proposals. I have seen the info on the
FROGS website. These dont include two things I think would be great for the
park and it would be interesting to see what sort of comments come back
1) Skate board park
2) Trim/Fitness Trail
Is there a scheduled meeting of FROGs in the near future?

I think the general view was that as there is a skate park in Dame Emily Park
(and plans to upgrade it) then another in Greville Smyth wouldn't be the best
use of resources. There are proposals for some BMX bumps in Greville Smyth.
I don't think that Trim Trails didn't came up at the FrOGS meetings (that I
recall). The full notes from the consultation haven't been compiled yet - I
think there were over 300 responses!. When they are typed up they'll come to a
future FrOGS meeting.
I'm sorry I don't know the next date for the FrOGS meeting - the last one was
just a couple of weeks ago. The next event is Lazy Sunday in Greville Smyth on
Sunday 6 July. there will be lots of FrOGS around in the park that day so If
you're free drop by for a chat, a cup of tea and some nice cake.
Best wishes

Hi Matthew,
That would be a shame, for me it sounds a bit like saying DEP has kiddies play
areas so GSP doesnt need them. If there was a Skate board track I am sure it
would get used as much as the BMX, why not both? What are the costs/resources
available?
There is a great example in Royal Victoria Park I think in Bath. Looked like
an excellent compact half pike unit based around scaffolding, not the ugly
concrete ones.
On the Trim trail subject, I've emailed Bristol Parks. As an occasional runner
around the park I think a simple well structured circuit going around the
perimeter of the park would be excellent, i.e. step ups, chin ups, log lifts.
Alot of the stuff available on the market is very expensive but I'm sure you
can get it cheaper bespoke.
Again it comes down to money?. Who do you put a proposal too? and who can tell
you what sort of money constraints you have to work within?

Hi,
A trim trail has come up at Dame Emily too, but nothing much happens. To
help it to happenkeep (at either or both places) someone needs to get a map
of the park, work out where a trim trail(s) would fit (eg not straight
across a football pitch) and jot down other requirements (eg would there be
distance markers? what would they look like?). Bring it as a proposal
for discussion to a FroGS or DEPP meeting, otherwise, it's just a vague
idea. Cheers, Ben.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - spare us the noise and ugliness of a skate board park in
beautiful Greville Smyth Park!
I could just about stomach a properly confined BMX track or a sensitively
designed Trim Trail (as long as it was designed so as not to a) interfere too
much with other legitimate park-users, particulalrly dog walkers (who I would
contend are the main users of the park, being there every day in all seasons
and weather) or b) disturb what meagre wildlife remains, this having already
been pushed out to the park perimeter as it is).
But a skate board park would just about spell the end of any quiet and peaceful
enjoyment we have left in this lovely place!
Is it really such a hardship to confine skate boards to Dame Emily Playpark?!

And why should we confine the young people who want to
use skateboards to a tiny area of a tiny park? Parks
are for everyone and, like it or not, young people on
skateboards are legitimate park-users.

Obviously what we need is more parkland to fit in all the different totally
legitimate uses! But failing that, it is particularly difficult when activities
/ amenities actually conflict. Skateboard areas do disturb people, dogs and
wildlife, and tend to dominate the atmosphere of a place. I find Greville
Smythe a suprisingly peaceful place considering it's close proximity to the
disasterous 1960's road-building, and value this aspect.
But it is very important to be inclusive, particularly regarding young people
who can just be seen as disruptive. Some youngsters undeniably like noise and
movement in a way that older people don't, and younger children find
intimidating. So any facilities that increase noise and movement should take
this into account. But could youth provision also be more imaginative? Not all
young people want to just hurl themselves into space. Could some activities be
specifically for that age group, but catering for a wider range - especially
girls (who tend to get overlooked as they are generally not seen as a "problem"
as much as boys - all the youth provision like skateboards, bmx and football
are overwelmingly more boy than girl activities). What would younger people
themselves chose?

We (S1PYD) are currently employing two detached
reconnaissance youth workers under the supervision
Sally Carter of BCC Youth and Play Services to talk to
young people in various settings to find out what they
want. An interim report is expected in October and a
final report in January.
S1PYD is South 1 Partnership for Youth Development and
it's something that Brian Hall and myself have been
working towards for a year or so and we have finally
assembled a good team to work with which includes
Youth Services, Fire Service and Police. We want to
offer the young people in the area services that they
will use and currently this is going along the lines
of us taking the service to them rather than looking
for one permanent location.
Brian and I have also discussed the fact that young
people and their intentions and behaviour are often
plain misunderstood and we'd like to somehow enlighten
the community as a whole as their behaviour and how
they see it. I'd like to think that we can find an
holistic solution to the problem rather than just
throw any old thing at them.

There is a conflict between relatively peaceful green park and concrete
skateboard park. We need both but great care in choosing where skateboarding
goes - not necessarily in parks. Here is a great one in Malmo basically in
a car park. That desert of wasted space under the flyover could be good.

Yes, young people on skateboards are legitimate park users - but unfortunately,
as has been said elsewhere, they really don't mix with other legitimate park
users (old, not so old AND young) who appreciate the park for its peacefulness.
There is little enough peace around here that we should be looking for ways in
which to destroy it even more. Can't "young people" enjoy peacefulness too?
(Bet you many of them do and would appreciate some more of it!)
But I do think the suggestion to use the wasted space under the flyovers for
skateboaders is a really excellent idea - sounds like a good compromise to me.

Hi,
Around about October and November Bristol Parks will be conducting
discussions on the 'Area Green Space Plan' for the general Bedminster area.
They are doing Brislington at the moment.
This plan will underpin the council's investment strategy for the next 20
years. But, that doesn't mean there will be lots of money to spend. Even
if groups raise their own money from the lottery etc, I think the council
will not be too keen to take over the maintenance costs of too many sites.
That's a mistake that they've made in the past.
My guess would be that, in the forseeable future (5 years?), the best we can
expect is one decent skateboard etc area in Bedminster. We don't have that
now. George Ferguson is right that it doesn't have to go into a park, but
I can't think of any available non-park site in Bedminster. Can you?
That leaves, it seems to me, three possible locations:
1. Greville Smyth Park. There might be space over by the flyover, but at
the moment the proposal seems to be linked with a wildlife area. I don't
see how that would work.
2. Dame Emily Park. There is already a skateboard area, the oldest in
Bristol, but it is in poor repair.
3. Victoria Park. The biggest of the three parks. I think its new
development plan includes quite a lot of play equipment, but I'm not sure
about a wheels area. Does anybody know?
Of course, there are other green spaces including St John's Churchyard,
South Street Park and Gores Marsh Park, but none of these seem particularly
suitable and locals have not requested a bike and skateboard area. In
fact, I'm sure they would resist it.
This will be an interesting discussion once the Area Green Space Planning
process gets under way.
Cheers, Ben.
