Extra eyes on downtown
By Michelle Bruch
When private security officers took a one-day strike on Feb. 25, they were
being watched — by other security guards — as they moved past cameras at the
buildings they patrol.
Private officers are getting more attention than ever Downtown, and it’s not
just because of the picket line. The city estimates that for every Downtown
cop, there are 13 private security workers.
Moving on
By Michelle Bruch
Outgoing Macy’s North Chairman Frank Guzzetta is selling his North Loop condo
at Rock Island Lofts and moving back to Washington, D.C., but he insists we
haven’t seen the last of him.
He isn’t giving up his board positions at the Guthrie Theater and the MacPhail
Center for Music. And he wants to serve as our “ambassador” and spread the word
about how fantastic Minneapolis is — he thinks it’s ridiculous that everyone
sent him hand warmers and mittens when he moved here.
Come one, come all

“So,” I start a conversation with the young lady sitting next to me at Bedlam
Social’s bar as I sip my $3 organic merlot, “You here to see the show?” Yup, we
were both waiting for the curtain of “After Ashley,” a gritty play called a
“shrewd, dark comedy” by the New York Times. Me: “And did you see the one last
week?” — Shakespeare’s seldom-performed “Titus Andronicus.”
“Yes,” she says, “I was in it.”
“Me, too,” chimed in the bartender.
That’s Bedlam Social for you — the West Bank’s year-old hybrid of performing
space, wine bar, café, networking service and community center (Oh, and
bike-repair shop). It knocks Culture off its pedestal and makes it as
accessible (and addictive) as baseball. By design.
