My name is Emily O'Winter, I am a third-(and final)-year graduate student at
the University of Colorado, Denver, pursuing a dual degree in Urban Planning
and Public Health. I work at the University of Colorado in healthy living
research, where we are currently looking at the effects of behavioral and
environmental changes on nutrition and physical activity in youth. My
primary interests are in our surroundings (physical and otherwise) and what
impact they have on our health.
I grew up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and because of this have always
had a strong interest in, and love for small towns. My lifelong
appreciation for community, and a constant desire to get involved with my
surroundings, be it nestled in a neighborhood of Denver, or high in the
mountains, drew me not only to an education in urban planning, but also to
this conference. While I enjoy research and being surrounded by academia, I
hope to eventually work in a more direct contact position with communities,
as a city planner.
If you are interested in health and the built environment, attached are two
short journal articles, the first on health, community and pubic spaces, and
the second discussing the built environment/land-use and obesity,
pedestrian/bike safety, water and air quailty and other health related
issues.
I look forward to meeting you all, what an outstanding group converging in
the Mile High City this week!
Safe travels to all,
Emily O'Winter
