Putting Your Garden to Bed

At the end of the summer season, most gardeners are winding down their
gardening activities and thinking about fall. Dakota County Master Gardener
Dean Davis, however is busy "putting his garden to bed". Join Dean as he
discusses important end of season tasks that will not only prepare your garden
for its restful slumber but ensure a more productive and successful spring
season next year. This class will cover:
* Closing down your grass gardens
* Packing-up your vegetable/fruit gardens
* Powering down your annual flower gardens
* Dividing up the perennial gardens
* Putting the pottery and art objects to bed
* Final issues and some answers
* Planting a color pot of spring bulbs for spring 2019
Dean grew up on a small dairy farm in West Central MN. He left the farm in the
60's to become an elementary teacher, but the farm never left him. He has been
gardening in Apple Valley ever since where he has collected, grown, and
currently enjoys over 300 different varieties of daylilies. His .5 acer lot
contains hundreds of hosta, many clematis vines, a large rain garden,
perennials a-plenty, large container pots, and many self-created art objects.
Dean's Master Gardening interests include historic garden planning and
construct at Dakota Heritage Village on the Dakota County Fairgrounds, adaptive
gardening techniques for seniors with dementia, plant donations to Habitat for
Humanity gardening projects, drip irrigation and getting his grandboys
interested in gardening.

attending this presentation. Dive into the science of pollination with a U of
MN Extension Master Gardener to discover what types of flowers not only make
your garden beautiful but also bring pollinators. Learn how to identify the
pollinators you will see in the neighborhood, and develop an understanding of
the threat they face in our communities. You'll leave empowered and inspired!
Paul Wood has been a lifetime gardener and is a University of Minnesota
Extension Master Gardener and a Minnesota Tree Care Advocate. He had been
following the plight of our pollinators and their need for native plant
habitats. He has designed several rain gardens as pollinator habitats and is
designing and installing a pollinator friendly native habitat for his home
gardens.
