Ward 1 DFL adjourned about 45 minutes ago without an endorsement. Jillia
Pessenda lead on all three ballots, over incumbent Kevin Reich. During three
ballots the top vote-getting was around 51 percent (Pessenda) or so -- not
reaching the needed 60 percent for endorsement. So a motion was passed to
adjourn without endorsement. List member Zach Wefel was dropped after the first
ballot (but got the loudest round of applause of the day, in my estimation,
when he made his gracious final speech.)

The rules for Ward 9 included:
a) no "drop" of underperforming candidates between ballots;
b) convention must go minimum 4 ballots or 3PM.
Many, apparently including the Farrah/Schiff camps (and apparently
some who were actually on the Rules Committee) thought that meant pull
the plug at 3PM if no endorsement had been reached. Both Farrah and
Schiff wanted no endorsement. So they tried to run the clock out.
Successive ballots showed little change in votes, since without the
drop rule there was little motivation for voters to change.
Chair Jason Cassidy did not interpret the rule as a deadline, but as
"at least that long". The Farrah camp tried hard but unsuccessfully to
get adjournment. So at about 3:15 they all walked out, perhaps
thinking that would cause adjournment. But there was still a quorum,
and after the results of the 4th ballot (Cano at ~59%) Cano was
endorsed by unanimous acclamation.
(Several observers commented that walkouts can indeed work, but not
when the math is against you.)

Anyone know how many votes were cast on the 4th ballot?

Thanks Karlie. Surprised the convention approved rules that didn't include an
automatic dropoff after the 2nd ballot. No dropoff makes it easier for
candidates to try and deadlock a convention. Not cool.

Approximately 272, but I didn't make note of it. I think all 4 ballots
were in the 270-280 range, not much dropoff at all.

Saturday, May 6th:
Ward 02 -- no endorsement
Ward 03 -- still balloting
Ward 12 -- Andrew Johnson endorsed on 1st ballot
Ward 02 -- no endorsement
Ward 03 -- still balloting
Ward 12 -- Andrew Johnson endorsed on 1st ballot
Was ward to a vote for no endorsement or a lack of a vote. If it were just a
lack of a vote, the Central Committee has the authority to make an endorsement.
In past conventions, it was an affirmative vote that the ward 2 DFL would not
endorse a candidate for City Council.
