The Mobile Police Station will be located outside Headington Co-op on the
London Road both mornings this weekend (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 January) from
9am to 12 noon.
The Neighbourhood Officer for Headington North "will be completing surveys with
the local community to establish the priorities for the Neighbourhood Action
Group".
I am afraid I did not go to the meeting about the new North Headington
Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) at Brookes on 10 January, so I can't tell you
any more than that -- I am not even certain exactly what area "Headington
North" covers. Perhaps someone who went to the meeting could tell us more.
But the main thing is to visit the van at the weekend and let the police know
what worries you in the Headington area.
Stephanie, the link below shows a map of Neighbourhood Action Groups (NAGs); http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/bcu/Oxfordshire/local-police-area/oxford_city/oxford-city.htm Headington north is basically north london rd not including northway/marston. The NAG for my patch is Headington South and Woodfarm. It meets Jan 30th 2.30pm Woodfarm comm centre and is a chance to quiz the police about local issues. I think the benefit of them is that it builds links between communities and brings the police more into the communuty which has been a problem in the past.
Just to add to Joe's e-mail; the Quarry side of Quarry and Risinghurst ward is
also in the Headington South NAG. Risinghurst is in the Barton, Sandhills and
Risinghurst NAG, next meeting Wednesday 21st February 2pm at Barton
Neighbourhood Centre.
NAGs are certainly a positive development and have had success elsewhere in
linking the police better into communities -- but it does amaze me that the
ones in our area all seem to meet during work hours.
Thanks to three city councillors for the clarification. I think I understand it better now. The main point to make is that the map shows that the North Headington NAG covers the shops on *both* sides of the London Road. So I imagine that there could be issues affecting the Headington District shopping centre that you may want to bring up this weekend even if you live in a neighbouring NAG. The Neighbourhood Action Group map that Joe pointed out: http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/bcu/Oxfordshire/local-police-area/oxford_city/oxford-city.htm shows that 22 neighbourhoods will be covered by 12 NAGs. I gather that only two NAGs have operated in Headington up until now, namely: (1) Barton, Sandhills, & Risinghurst NAG: covering Barton (Area 9) and Sandhills and Risinghurst (Area 13) (2) Wood Farm, Girdlestone, and South Headington NAG: covering Headington South (Area 13) and Wood Farm & Girdlestone (Area 15) So the North Headington NAG which is just about to be launched covers just one neighbourhood (Area 8), which comprises the Headington and London Roads themselves and all parts to the north of those roads from Headington Hill to Barton (plus a confusing detour to include Oxford Brookes University and Cheney School). I don't think that the Marston and Northway NAG which will cover Marston (Area 4) and Northway (Area 5) has been launched yet, but I may be wrong.
Consultation has shown that residents would like the following three issues prioritized by the new Neighbourhood Action Group for Headington North (which includes the whole shopping centre): speeding cars antisocial behaviour cycling on pavements. See article in the Oxford Mail: http://www.oxfordmail.net/display.var.2017925.0.nagging_to_police_pays_off.php
It's good to see the following item in today's Oxford Mail (12 May 2008)
following on from the Headington North NAG's deciding to tackle pavement
cycling as one of its priorities; but why weren't the cyclists given fixed
penalties?
Cycle alert
OXON: Police say they will clamp down on cyclists riding on pavements after
spotting 33 in just two hours.
Police in Headington have carried out four surveys at the junction of London
Road and Windmill Road in the past month.
The highest number of culprits caught was 33, between 3pm and 5pm on Monday,
April 28.
None were given fixed penalties.
Thames Valley Police Mobile Police Station will be outside level 2 of the main John Radcliffe Hospital on Wednesday 28 May from 12 noon to 2pm. They will be happy to discuss any police-related issues, and if you bring your bicycle they will postcode it for you. This is again organized by the Headington North Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG), which seems to be very active, but of course as it includes the shopping centre, Brookes University, and the JR Hospital, people from most of Headington and Marston have an interest in it. A reminder about the four NAGs covering Headington and Marston: · Barton, Risinghurst, and Sandhills: http://www.saferoxford.org.uk/np_BRS_Nag.asp · Headington North: http://www.saferoxford.org.uk/np_HeadNorthNag.asp · Headington South: http://www.saferoxford.org.uk/np_HeadSouthNag.asp · Marston: http://www.saferoxford.org.uk/np_MarstonNag.asp On each of those pages there are links telling you who your local police team are, and showing their activities and initiatives. I see in today's Oxford Mail that the Barton neighbourhood policing team are organizing a weekly surgery at their new office in Underhill Circus on Tuesdays from 1pm to 4pm: http://www.oxfordmail.net/display.var.2272082.0.police_launch_surgery_days.php I suspect that we would all like a local office and a weekly surgery....
