Hello all:
I am using the notes taken by Chip, and revised by me, at the SPED
Outreach meeting of September 19 as the committee's monthly report for
the SPED's Executive Committee meeting next Monday at Rondo.
A reminder to all: I have included below the SPED Outreach calendar for
last the Tuesday in September and the month of October. Please refer to
the documents I sent on September 12, titled 1) Workshop leaders -
Volunteer Responsibilities and 2) Tabling at Rondo - Volunteer
Responsibilities. Please refer to them as you plan your workshop or
tabling.
Our biggest challenge right now is how to engage library patrons to
take the classes we offer, and to make it relevant to them. We can use
all the suggestions as far as contacts in organizations around Rondo,
etc.
We had an informal inquiry from SPIF member Erin Stojan about having
workshops at a neighborhood setting. We'll follow up on that idea.
Thank you all, for your work, your enthusiasm, your expertise, and your
continued involvement. We had 100 % increase in our second workshop,
from here on, we can only go forward!! :)

Summary Notes
19 September 2006
Attendees and logistics: Marc Trimble, Mike Fratto, committee chair
Rosa Maria de la Cueva Peterson, Chip Peterson, Tim Erickson, Katy
Schulz, Rondo Library Associate, Meeting held Rondo Library beginning
at 6:00 p.m. Notified they could not attend: Michelle Fure, Brady
Onkka, Cathi Lyman Onkka, Sara Reller, Gary Thompson (summary notes
prepared by Chip Peterson, <email obscured> and Rosa Maria de la Cueva
Peterson, <email obscured>).
Introductions
Tim reviewed September 5 meeting for Marc (only one who had not been
present).
September 12. Rosa Maria noted that there has not been enough advanced
publicity for the workshops. Just one (very satisfied) person enrolled
for the email course taught by Cathi Lynman Onkka and Brady Onkka.
Tabling went fine: recruited the one participant for the email course
and videotaped her, during tabling and workshop and after taking the
course.
September 19. Tim reported tabling went well. Sara Reller and Tim set
up a blog in Blogger.Com where library patrons can have hands
on-experience on learning what a blog is. Library staff seemed
enthusiastic about what we are doing. CTEP volunteer stopped by. WeÂ’ll
try to have more contact with her. Note added after the meeting: The
Power of Video workshop taught by SPNN's Bonnie Schumacher (again,
extremely satisfied
Promotion. Cathi Lynman Onkka has sent email and pdf file to several
neighborhood organizations announcing workshops. Rosa Maria will follow
up with some calls as well.
Rondo Library Liaison. Katy Schulz, Rondo Library Associate in charge
of Technology will be the liaison between the library and SPED. She
joined us for some 10 minutes. She will sign up to the SPED Outreach
Forum.
Publicity material: (Ours) says workshops start at 6:00 pm and RondoÂ’s
6:30. It is 6:30 pm. We will correct error. Library materials are
correct.
Library loudspeaker announcement: An announcement to patrons a half and
hour before classes start may or may not be possible. Rondo staff is
trying to use it as little as possible. Katy will bring it up to
library staff meeting.
Promotion: posted announcements in library: WeÂ’ll try to get a flier
announcing Tuesday workshops, and the workshop being held that specific
day. Rosa Maria will be in touch with Katy about promotion.
Other groups in the library doing technology classes: Sometime in the
future weÂ’ll meet with other groups to find out what technology
training is taking place at Rondo, how to learn and
Training: Mike mentioned he would be interested in learning more about
the electronic classroom. Next Tuesday September 26, 5:45pm. Katy will
show technical capabilities in RondoÂ’s electronic classroom to SPED
volunteers.
Other: Membership in Friends of the St. Paul Public Libraries will give
us access to additional resources. We should consider it.
Podcasting. TimÂ’s definition: Creating digital and audio files through
the Internet and distributing them in easily accessible ways, such as
on a computer or on an I-Pod or other MP3 player.
Marc has chosen Odeo.com as the best tool for SPED Outreach volunteers
to use at Rondo. Odeo makes podcasting simple. It could be located on
SPPL sites if libraries are amenable. Marc suggests for all of us to
download Odeo and practice recording in our homes.
Podcasting days for 2006 will be October 3, November 7, December 5.
Podcasts will take place during tabling hours from 3:00-5:30 and
6:30-8:30 on the first Tuesday of each month. Marc will take the
leadership on the monthly podcasts during both tabling hours. Tim will
also be involved in podcasting.
Podcasting October 3 will focus on Rondo Library and include library
patrons and staff interviewing each other about Rondo Library. It will
be useful to have specific questions or a script. We will get oral
releases from podcast participants, and written ones for patrons under
16.
Budget. Last winter, participants in the Digital Junction Conference on
December 12, 2005 (co-hosted by MN Rural Partners, C-CAN –Community
Computer Access Network, CTEP –Community Technology Empowerment Project
and sponsored by the MSNet--Minnesota State Network, the Minneapolis
Foundation and HP) were invited to submit a planning proposal for a
project designed to bridge the Digital Divide. Those groups whose
projects seemed viable were granted a $3000 planning grant to work on a
full-fledged proposal. Rosa Maria and Tim, representing St. Paul
E-Democracy, were part of a group that received a planning grant along
with Intermedia Arts, Digital Watershed and Cristina Lopez from the
Digital Media Center at the UofM. One of the components of the proposal
submitted to the Minneapolis Foundation included work in the St. Paul
libraries. The large group with which we worked was not awarded the
full-fledged grant, but $1000 of the planning grant was assigned to
each of the three main organizations involved in the writing and is
available to SPED Outreach.
The Outreach Planning process for the individual work of St. Paul
E-Democracy began last spring as did tabling at Lexington Library, and
learning about patrons needs, taking surveys at the end of the spring,
community and volunteer meetings in the summer, and the development of
a workshop schedule for the fall. None of the $1000 has been spent yet.
Tim will submit a request to Intermedia Arts to receive that amount.
Tim and Rosa Maria have chosen to use the money for the implementation
phase of SPEDÂ’s Outreach project. Rosa Maria will submit a budget for
the use of this money to SPEDÂ’s Executive Committee for its approval.
At the meeting we had the input of those present and had asked comments
from all members of the outreach committee, some of whom sent comments.
Proposed Budget for implementation phase for 2006-2007
Amount available: The full $1000 to be used the money in DIRECT benefit
to the library users enhancing skills-building (e.g., handouts to
follow up workshops, scholarships to SPNN, transportation, etc.) or
enhancing greater participation of library users in future programs
(e.g., promotion materials: a simple flier with date, hours and
description of workshops; pizza for youth groups; cookies and drinks to
a neighborhood organization meeting, etc.).
Instructional Materials for 24
(24 Workshop handouts) up to $15 per session $360
Printing costs (tabling handouts, promotion fliers) $100
Six events a year to enhance patron (youth) participation (pizzas,
drinks, etc.)
up to $50 per event $300
Scholarships (SPNN $100 registration for 5 +140 classes) $240
We will revise this budget at the end of the Fall 2006 session and see
whether this is the best way to enhance participation and skill
building.
