Thursday, at 6:30.
The Gathering/Safety Vigil will be Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm. Per Leigh's
suggestion, let's meet at the NE corner of the park, on 32nd and 14th. Great
idea that it should be a very Powderhorn gathering--music, art,
dancing...whatever any one wants to bring to the event!
I think anyone/everyone should do what they can to get the word out. Contact
churches, etc.
I could create a press release? Or, Kari, do you want to do that? I can do
whatever needs to be done.
Would someone also want to create fliers to hand out at the vigil about the
brainstorming meeting? That would be really helpful! Does anyone want to
doorknock about the vigil and meeting, too? The more people involved the
BETTER.
For the Brainstorming Meeting:
I am thinking the Thursday meeting will very much be a fun, collaborative
brainstorming session.
From the meeting we will walk away with a schedule and "leaders" for various
projects. Having said that, of course, it doesn't mean that if you can't attend
the Thursday meeting you can't start up your own project or partake in one of
the TBD other projects. This will be ongoing. It has to be.
Before the meeting on Thursday, perhaps the question we should ask ourselves
is, "What am I good at? What do I like to do? And in what creative ways can I
bring those things to the neighborhood so there is a longterm benefit that
serves to bring people together and reduce crime?" Say your answer is "walking"
and "organizing," then perhaps you could lead a Walking Group, setting up times
to meet, encouraging blocks to get involved, encouraging your group to get out
when it's cold. Or maybe you cross-country ski or snoeshoe. What about doing it
with groups on a regularly scheduled basis in and around the park?
Or maybe, like me, your answer is different, maybe your answer to that question
is something like "muckraking and storytelling." :) So how can I use that to
prevent crime, I wonder? Well, one thing I've been wanting to do FOREVER is
start up a youth newspaper in Powderhorn, using the park building as a meeting
place. It would give young people an opportunity to get involved with
neighborhood issues, as well as learn real skills that can serve the
neighborhood and benefit their future. So....one idea would be that I would
lead this effort, along with a few other lovely volunteers!
Or maybe you do yoga and could help teach classes to youth. Or maybe you have a
dog and would like dog-walking partners--another way to get out and get visible
in groups.
Again, this is part of the brainstorm that will happen on Thursday! We can
break off into groups and present ideas and determine an ongoing schedule for
the projects.
Looking forward to meeting everyone. Although this has been such a tragic,
awful event, it's been inspiring to see people coming together to offer
solutions and support. Just one of the many reasons Powderhorn is such a
fantastic place to live.
