feedback, the No Biking signs on the North end of the park have reappeared. The
original intent and the original problems with those signs still exist.
SAFE ACCESS;There is no other good safe access to the park from the North.
This is important not just to the numerous leisure and commuter cyclists but
especially to the constant stream of families with small children heading for
the playground or community center or farther. The alternatives are a poorly
maintained uneven sidewalk on 27th Avenue, riding against the one way on 27th
Avenue , or heading out to 28th Ave with its high traffic volume, tight lanes
and much higher speeds. The sidewalk alternative is of questionable legality
and presents a safety challenge to the younger cyclists. I can't imagine anyone
considers 28th Avenue a safer alternative.
ALTERNATIVES to NO BIKING:
1. Given the less than optimal sidewalk widths and the congestion. I think
designating it as a SHARED PATHWAY and highlighting the need for caution and
courtesy from all users is a good option. This alternative is present in many
other similar places our parks and appears to be a good compromise.
2. In the longer term there does appear to be room beside the ball fields and
tennis courts for separate trails as well as between the community center and
the beach. This would limit the length of shared pathway and with some creative
engineering might make shared trail unnecessary .
All users have a right to safe and convenient access to and through the park. I
hope the cyclist unfriendly signs will be removed to acknowledge that right is
shared by all park users.
