walks. The July 2018 schedule begins the second week because the first
Wednesday is July Fourth. Meeting places will vary but the meeting time
will always be 7 pm. Check the Seward forum at e-democracy.org/seward for
weekly updates for the Wednesday walks.
Flyer attached.
July 11: A trip around the perimeter of the Hennepin County Agricultural
Society fairgrounds.
In our earliest years, Seward was home to fifteen Grand Expositions,
County and State Fairs from 1865 to 1883. Leaders will be the History
Committee. Photos and posted signs will indicate fair activities. Meet in
front of the doors to Matthews Center (2318 29th Ave S) at 7 pm.
July 18: How to read a building
All of us can read a book and add to our knowledge. But how many people can
read a building? All of us can learn this visual literacy, given the
opportunity. Seward Neighborhood author Bob Roscoe will teach us. Wherever
you live in this South Minneapolis community, a building's (or landscape's)
history is waiting for you to discover. Meet at the Birchwood Cafe (3311
East 25th Street) at 7 pm.
July 25: Seward's landmark SCOTUS case
Visit the site of the former Shapiro Dry Cleaning Store where the historic
Near vs. Minnesota Court case on Freedom of the Press began. The location
is under consideration for a national historic marker. Bob Franklin, a
retired reporter and editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune and a longtime
adjunct journalism teacher, will lead the group. We will meet at the
Redesign offices (2619 Franklin Avenue) at 7 pm and remain there for the
evening.
August 1: Tour the historic Ivy Arts Building
Learn the story of its connection to Flour City Ornamental Iron. Rick
Musser will lead a discussion on the history of the factory, what they
made, unionizing and riots of the 1930s. There will be slides and photos. A
tour of the building follows. Meet at the Ivy Arts Building (2637 27th
Avenue) at 7 pm.
