Tomorrow the City DFL will hold its endorsing convention at Edison High school
(2 blocks from NE library).
With 4 candidates and only 3 school board directorships open...this will be
an interesting convention.
2 state ballot issues will be discussed and voted on from the floor: the
'Davnie' amendment changing at-large directors to a mixed at-large/district
governance (similar to the Park Board model) and the Referendum Levy.
The school board candidates who have been running are:
1) Incumbent Lydia Lee
2) Jill Davis
3) Carla Bates
A newcomer has entered the race, Dan Miller.
His local Mpls-relevant credentials include serving as the Mayor's appointee
on the Mpls Library Board Advisory Committee from McKinsey & Co. that
recommended the Hennepin County Library Merger. Mr. Miller has received the
Mayor's endorsement (per a delegate e-mail 'blast' this morning).
McKinsey authored the MPS strategic plan. Altho the presentation to the
school board said a governance change was suggested but not approved, the
McKinsey presentation to the City Council listed a governance change as a
recommendation. That was enthusiastically endorsed by one council member who
suggested the school board governance be changed to the mayor's office.
In an interview with the Minnesota Monitor yesterday, when asked if he would
abide by the DFL endorsement he said ' No '...please see link for full
comment.

background and comments on the endorsement procedure:

What was expected to be a fairly routine convention, may turn out to be very
interesting as Rules are fought over and endorsement jockeying occurs.

I was impressed by Carla Bates- her own kids attend Minneapolis
Public Schools, and she was honest about the very real problems the
district faces. Carla and veteran board member Jill Davis are also
the only candidates endorsed by Stonewall DFL, the DFL party's GLBTI
caucus. In the last 24 hours I have received a robo call from Lydia
Lee and a slick flyer from Dan Miller. Lydia made herself look
desperate with the robo call, a campaign tool usually reserved for
federal candidates in trouble. As for Dan Miller, if you want to see
our schools meet the same fate as our lost library system, vote for him.
from Hawthorne, where school attendance is optional...

1) All 3 SEIU endorsed Minneapolis School Board Candidates did robo calls to delegates and alternates to the city convention. Those candidates were Lydia Lee, Jill Davis, and Carla Bates. Some of the calls reminded people where and when to go to be part of the process and some asked for an endorsement. It's no different than an automated reminder call before a doctor's appointment, which is now rather common. 2) While it is true that some candidates have sent flyers others have sent out postcards with meet and greet events but it's all a matter of timing. There is nothing wrong with direct mail, which all 4 known Minneapolis School Board Candidates have used. The difference is that some have been connecting with potential supporters since precinct caucuses back in February and some have just started in the past few weeks. 3) All 4 known Minneapolis School Board Candidates have sent emails out to delegation members that they have come in contact with too. 4) All 4 known Minneapolis School Board Candidates also have web sites with endorsements and ideas. All 4 known Minneapolis School Board Candidates are organized and passionate about the future of Minneapolis Public Schools. Take a Look for yourself and make up your own mind. Carla Bates http://carlabates.org/ Jill Davis http://jilldavis.net/ Dan Miller http://www.danmiller2008.org/ Lydia Lee http://lydialeeforkids.com/ 5) Want to know more about the Minneapolis DFL Convention? The Convention Delegates also voted to support both the School Funding
Referendum and the Election by Districts ('Davnie bill') referendum by over 60%
in both cases.
I was at the City DFL convention today as both a delegate (W6 P8) and as a member of Carla Bate's convention team. I am thrilled at her first place performance today and at her tremendous qualifications as a School Board candidate. http://carlabates.org/ I first met Carla earlier this year when she successfully screened for endorsement with Stonewall DFL (the LGBT caucus of the DFL). I have been working on her campaign ever since. It is especially satisfying to help an openly lesbian candidate to the DFL endorsement. Carla and her partner have three kids in Minneapolis public schools. She will be a very smart, effective and hard working School Board member. A special shout out to regular list contributor (and my good friend and constituent) Barb Lickness on her election as City DFL Associate Chair today. Her energy, skills and intelligence will be an asset the party and to our city. Peace, Robert Lilligren Ward 6 Phillips West
