Neighbors,
I am addressing the community about a matter that concerns me. I joined
this site with the understanding that its purpose
was to share news and info about neighborhood matters. Things that are
happening locally or in our community.
Where we could find a service for our homes or yards or events happening in
our neighborhood like classes and
gatherings of local value. Local business news and community happenings and
events happening in Standish-Ericson.
An excellent example is the recent sharing of info about "chickens in the
city."
I am a vegetarian; have been so for 32 years so, of course, this has no
interest for me but this topic is
clearly appropriate for this site as it is of value to some of us and
germane to our local community.
For some reason, I am finding constant, almost daily, posts from Mr "A
Bihi," a person I have never met and do not know, which contain
political messages about Somali's being recruited in Canada, apparently to
fight in a war somewhere. I do not believe these posts belong
in this forum. I am not interested in hearing International and National
advocacy for racial or cultural "causes." I think
the National networks and the New York Times,e.g., are places where such
issues are discussed. Is there any hope that this site
will keep its emphasis on the local community issues and not be a forum for
the promulgating of
International issues?
Sincerely,
Jay Ordoyne

Dear Jay and neighbors,
When a subject doesn't interest you, it's easy to quickly delete it, but
this is the Cedar Riverside forum and "international issues" are often of
the greatest concern here. The majority of permanent residents are
immigrants, and what happens in their home countries is extremely important
to them.
I haven't seen a live chicken since I started working in the neighborhood.

I am originally from Louisiana. What happens there is of great interest to
me.
Would you like for me to post daily info about what is happening in
Louisiana?
Should each member of this forum post info on a daily basis about issues
happening in their Native country? I don't know where you live. I live in
Standish-Ericson
and the VAST majority of my neighbors are not from foreign countries, at
least, not
the last generation or two. I am not questioning if there are racial,
political or cultural
issues that are happening all over the world that are of concern to the
people
who live in this area. My question is if this is a forum for
*local*community news and events.
Do you understand the issue I am raising?

Thank you Fredda for your warm enightening words to our Minneapolitan
neighbor. If you don't like what is posted on this forum DO NOT READ IT BUT
DELETE IT. We will keep talking about the world because what is happening
out there affects our daily life here in Cedar Riverside and also on our
American Economy. If Arabs stop selling oil to us, will we be able to work?
Figure it out why the world events have impact on the lives of every

Hi jay, I see what your talking about, and to some extend agree. I feel as
though we already get bombarded with all these radical movement everywhere. As
a forum we should talk about things that are being done to combat such
activities and how everyday residents are stepping in to make the neighborhood
a better place. I don't really want this to also turn into a place where we
simply just post articles from newspapers but rather a place where we generate
discussion and create opportunities for individuals to get active. Just my
thought.

American Citizen.
Peace & harmony to all

I'm originally from Louisiana too! Small world.
Since the list isn't overflowing with other traffic, how are the live
chickens doing down there? I haven't checked recently, I assume they've
recovered from Mardi Gras by now and are gearing up for Jazzfest, right?

Jay et al,
As visitors (both from Standish Ericsson where we have our own forum -
http://e-democracy.org/se ), we are guests with those who live and
work in Cedar Riverside.
The local scope is determined by the forum's charter and guided by the
volunteer Forum Manager, Ben Marcy in consultation with forum members.
In our Standish and Ericsson neighborhoods, we have many "community
life" discussions like "who can recommend a good plumber." Plumbers
aren't unique to our neighborhood, but it is part our share experience
as homeowners (mostly).
Sharing information the youth (we have many here) and parents on this
Cedar Riverside forum can use to keep their kids or friends from being
recruited by Al-Shaab (which at least at some point was active in the
area), is absolutely part of the shared experience of many who live in
Cedar Riverside. That said, both Ben and I have communicated to
Abdirizar Bihi that it is important to take a minute and provide some
localizing context even something as simple as "news to share with the
youth of our neighborhood." We are all learning as we are going here.
We do encourage people to "model" the kind of content they would like
to see on the forum by taking the initiative to post it themselves. In
an area without a neighborhood newspaper, we all have the power to be
mini-journalists. While folks can express concerns about the scope of
posts to Ben directly - <email obscured> benjamin.j.marcy
(at) gmail.com - the absolutely most effective way to make it serve
your "local" interests is to find something to post. You can generated
something original or find information to forward. Here are some tips:

Jay and others:
I regret that I wasn't more clear. I assumed that most of us read the
newspaper.
Young Somali men were recruited from our neighborhood to engage in
terrorism. They were some of the best and brightest. Some died. The
neighborhood grieves for them.
