Update on Portland Avenue officer involved shooting
August 29, 2008 (MINNEAPOLIS) Last night just after 10 p.m. officers
in the Third Precinct responded to a fight call in the 3900 block of
Portland Avenue South. Multiple calls were made to 911 about the
incident and one caller also overheard mention of a gun by one of the
fighters.
Two Minneapolis Police officers arrived on the scene and were shot at
as soon as they got out of their squad car. One of the two officers
returned fire and struck the suspect in the arm. That suspect, who
sustained a non-life threatening injury, has been identified as
Anthony Marice Brown (Date of birth March 26, 1979). He was taken to
HCMC for treatment and his condition is unknown at this time. Police
recovered two handguns from the yard where the incident occurred.
The officer involved in this incident is Officer Frank Kutz. Officer
Kutz joined the Minneapolis Police Department in 1993 and graduated
from the Recruit Academy in May of that year. During his FTO training
he worked in the Second and Fourth Precincts. Following his FTO
period he was permanently assigned to the Second Precinct patrol. In
2004 Officer Kutz transferred to the Third Precinct where he is
presently assigned to the Middle watch. Officer Kutz has received the
Department's Award of Merit for his actions in the apprehension of a
robbery suspect who had preyed on an elderly victim.
Officer Kutz and the other officer who was at the scene are still on
the standard paid administrative leave while the Homicide and Internal
Affairs Units complete their investigations.
A booking photo of Brown is available. This case has been referred to
the Hennepin County Attorney's Office for charging.
The PIO contact for this incident is Sgt. William Palmer.
