SOS.
We have been let down by our children's story teller and would ask if anyone
could take this on.
The venue would be Charles Lawson Estate Agent's on Saturday 29th Nov. at a
time to suit.
(We would suggest an hour in the morning say 11am and if poss an hour in the
afternoon say 2pm.)
Is there a person or persons on the forum - or know of someone - who could
help?
Please contact: Jill Cummings. Telephone 07765505444
What about the person who usually does the storytelling anually on Shotover? It's a council-run thing, and he's very good. Don't know the name though - someone in the Council must. ----- Original Message ----- From: Frank Cummings To: Oxford - Headington & Marston Neighbourhood Forum Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2008 9:00 PM Subject: [HMNF] Headington Christmas Experience SOS. BE THERE!
We note from Frank Cummings' posting the list of Headington shops and businesses participating in this weekend's Christmas event. Frog Orange has not been contacted regarding its contribution or involvement to this event. We assume this must be an accidental oversight on the part of the event organizers. However we will be open until 8.00pm on Thursday and we'll be holding a Santa's Lucky Gift Box. The cost will be £1 per 'dip' and 100% of the proceeds will go to Frog Orange's charity boxes. We will also be open EVERY SINGLE day from now until Christmas Day! http://www.frogorange.co.uk
The Headington Christmas Experience really livened up the shopping centre over the last few days, and Jill & Frank Cummings (who used to run Time & Elegance in Windmill Road) and Iain Nicholson (of Oxford Town Chambers Network) deserve everyone's thanks for organizing it. And of course it was wonderful that so many shops and businesses took part: I believe that Councillors Ruth Wilkinson and Altaf Khan have already gone round and thanked all of them individually. I have put some pictures up here: http://www.headington.org.uk/xmas/events_2008.html I couldn't take a photograph of the switching-on of the lights on Thursday because there were so many people in front of me that I could not actually see it! Then on Friday I could only catch the 8.30am carol-singing because I had to go to work, so missed the advent play. If anyone has any pictures of events I missed, I will be very glad to add them to the page. (Alternatively if the advent play photographs, for instance, are put on a different site, I could make a link to them.) We all criticize the number of estate agents in Headington, but they always come up trumps when there is an event like this. I particularly liked Santa's grotto in Chancellor's, and the item for the Odd-one-out competition in Scott Fraser's window. And I thought the Decibel Jazz Band from Leiden (all dressed as Father Christmas) were especially good yesterday: they lived up to their name and you could hear them everywhere.
Hi Stephanie
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
So far all positive comments received.
Jill & Frank
Does anyone know the deal with the dirty great big 'Andrews' banner surrounding
the Christmas Tree ?
Did Andrews Estate agent's pay for the Christmas tree, or are the just
'sponsering' it ? If so how much did they pay and to who?
It's a shame Headington has to have this type of advertising for it's Christmas
Tree, personally I think it is a real eyesore !
Re Frog Orange.
Your SWOT form response to question 2.
Would you run some sort of activity to promote your business on our Christmas
Trading Day?
Answer
NO. “We would like to - but are too busy at this time of year with basic
trade.”
Frog Orange’s form filled in by Rebecca Lee
Sorry you thought it was an oversight.
I don't know whether they are sponsoring the tree, but I feel that the festive
weekend was held far too early. Christmas is in December, not November. It
would have been far better to hold it a fortnight later, around the 13th of
December.
However, I would just like to announce to everybody that the stollen sold at
the cake-stall at the Farmer's Market is brilliant, as good as any I have ever
tasted. Full of marzipan, fruit and Christmas spirit.
Since West & Sons ceased trading in Headington Andrew's Estate Agency kindly
offered - when asked - to sponsor and pay for the Christmas tree, its
installation and removal.
Andrew's have sponsored the tree for the past 3 years and we are very grateful
to them in helping all business within the area.
Surely its better to have a Christmas Tree with advertising than not to have
one!
The tree is supplied by Christmas Tree Barn, Christmas Common.
The Estate Agents have been very active throughout the 7 years of Fundays and,
with the new event a 3 day Christmas Experience where they offered the
following help:
Chancellors: Santa's Grotto.
Charles Lawson: Story Telling
Buckell & Ballard: Bill Hiene book signing
Scott Fraser: Odd One Out Competition form sponsor
Lee & Lindars: Participants in the Odd One Out Competition
Connells: Assist with the Free Signed Oxford United football & shirt raffle.
Andrew's: Mulled wine & minced pies during the Christmas Tree Lights Switch On
ceremony.
I think it is worth mentioning that Andrew's are not like other estate agents: they are owned by three charitable trusts: details here: http://www.andrewsonline.co.uk/about-us/unique-history.aspx So it's not commercialism raising its ugly head at Christmas after all. The barrier arrangement isn't terribly attractive, but it is just the same with the tree in Broad Street. I don't think you can get festive barriers. I imagine that the shops like to have the lights switched on as soon as possible to put us in the mood to do our Christmas shopping good and early. Don't forget that the next farmer's market is a week early, on Friday 19 December: let's hope there is some stollen left.
Thanks for reminding folk about the next market. Headington Action hope to be
able to offer shoppers a free mince pie and some free hot applejuice with
cinnamon. Details being negotiated...
Given the number of estate agents in Headington and the downturn
affecting all of them, I'm pleased it is Andrews getting the
advertising space. They are at least a decent company, wholly owned
by three charities and returning all their profits, when they make
them, to those charities.
Long live Andrews, I say! We need more businesses like that!
But I take your point about how obtrusive it is.
Hmm... we had some dealings with Andrews earlier this year.
It was Welcome to Amateur Hour.
The following file was added to this topic:
Returning to the subject of the Christmas Tree - I don't think it is just the
banner around it that is the problem, although Andrews could have chosen a more
discreet way of mentioning themselves. It is that ghastly metal box
installation thing, almost as tall as a petrol pump, that occupies a quite
unsuitable position in the middle of the pavement. It gets in the way of
pedestrians all the year round. It could not have been put in a sillier place.
The poor Christmas tree appears to be barricaded in like a hostage.
