New Boots Pharmacy Opens at Bury Knowle Health Centre As a result of relocation, the well loved Alliance Pharmacy in Windmill Road has closed and reopened as a branch of Boots the chemist, next door to the Bury Knowle Health Centre. For more details see http://www.oxfordprospect.co.uk/HEADINGTONNEWS.htm#New_Boots_Pharmacy_Opens_at_Bury_Knowle_Health_Centre Though many regular customers will miss the opportunity of dropping in a prescription and having it processed while they did a spot of shopping, also several of the staff has said there is less room in the new store to display goods and notices. I think the Oxford Mail has made a mistake about there being a chemist on the old site in Windmill Road for the last hundred years. It is a pity there does not seem to be included in the design space for seating and a place to lock customers bikes.
Both the Alliance Pharmacy and Reynolds Blinds have recently moved to new premises in central Headington outside the primary shopping frontage. So we are lucky to have gained two new vacant A1 retail shops while not losing the old businesses. It will be interesting to see if any retailers want to move into the empty shops. For those who didn't see it, the article about the Windmill Road chemist shop in the Oxford Mail can be found here: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/3685353.Pharmacy_moves_after_100_years/ The shop has only been a chemist's since the 1980s, so the Oxford Mail did get its dates wrong. As I commented on their website over a fortnight ago, the people who think that they have been going to the chemist's there for fifty years may need a stronger prescription. You can see a brief history of the shop (with an old photograph from the 1920s) here: http://www.headington.org.uk/history/shops/skey_windmillrd.htm P.S. Hope to see some of you at the forum gathering at the Black Boy tonight at 7pm. P.P.S. Advance warning: we will have another empty shop at 4pm on Friday, when Sainsbury's closes down permanently -- and the Shell petrol station is closing for a period too.
Stephanie, you mean the Oxford Mail report of events, not the Oxford Prospect Magazine Report about the new chemist? Also did anyone see the mounted policemen in Bury Knowle on patrol or heard about the arson in Headington? see http://www.oxfordprospect.co.uk/HEADINGTONNEWS.htm
Nicholas: this forum isn't really a place to advertise local news all the time, unless it is something that can be discussed by everyone in a productive way. Otherwise there is a risk that people may suspect that you are simply trying to get cheap hits for your "Oxford Prospect" website. Yes, I knew about the mounted police in Bury Knowle Park, and in fact I reported it yesterday afternoon to Ruth Wilkinson, our local councillor who has contact with the police, so that she knew what was going on. If anyone on the forum doesn't know, it is in relation to the muggings that have taken place in Bury Knowle Park recently: see http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/yourtown/oxford/3706553.Muggers_strike_three_times/ And yes, I also knew about the arson in Headington, as does everyone who pays attention to the local news. If you want to know, there are details here on the Oxford Mail website: http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/3714113.Flat_fire_classed_as_arson/
