- live near freight rail tracks that carry hazardous cargo including oil,
chlorine, anhydrous ammonia, propane, and ethanol through our neighborhoods
daily. Saint Paul is home to rail yards as well - built in the 1800s when
"cargo" meant grain, livestock and passengers via steam, not haz-mat
freight via diesel.
To explore this further, Citizens Acting for Rail Safety - Twin Cities
(CARS-TC) and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health are
co-hosting a free community event tomorrow, Friday, April 20, featuring Dr.
Melissa Genereux of Quebec, Canada. Genereux is a public-health expert who
has studied community health, resiliency, and response impacts of the
Lac-Megantic, Quebec, oil train catastrophe (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lac-M%C3%A9gantic_rail_disaster) that killed
47 people in 2013. Dr Genereux will be sharing "lessons learned" and how
this applies to Minneapolis and St. Paul, in particular.
Location: Wilder Foundation Auditorium, 451 Lexington Pkwy North, St. Paul,
MN. Refreshments: 4:45 p.m. Presentation and Q and A session: 5:15 p.m. All
are welcome.
Space is limited, please register for this free community event.
