Those who are concerned, like I am, about the bad press that is often
copped by midwives, may be interested in this protest to support
midwives, on Friday in the Square.
I assume that men who are supportive of midwives will be welcomed.

Kia ora koutou!
Some of you may be aware of the very negative publicity that midwives
are currently receiving via The Press here in Chch.
I have just been contacted by my midwife to let me know of a protest
this Friday at 12 noon. Gathering at the Chalice in the Square at 12
noon and walking to the Press Offices. There will be balloons for kids
and leaflets with the real facts to hand out. As you are aware, NZ has
one of the best antenatal services in the world, thanks to midwives — we
don't want to lose it, due to misreporting and fear mongering by the media.
The aim is to show The Press and wider public that women are supportive
of our midwives and we don't agree with the biased reporting of The
Press in respect to midwifery services.
If you are able to, please support this important issue.
Hope to see you there!
Please pass this on to your networks.
Thanks very much
Rachel

Hi there
First I have to declare my conflict in posting this - my wife is a midwife
Secondly putting it on the line - Tony Ryall, National's health spokesman has
indicated that it would be National's preference to bring GPs back into the
maternity care system
GPS currently can be LMCs (Lead Maternity Carers) but choose not to be, because
they would have to make home visits, earn less money and turn up at a birth at
all hours of the day and night! When was the last time you had a house call
after hours by your GP?
However the plan National has hatched is to have midwives working in GPs
surgeries under the supervision of the GP, the woman would be seen by whoever
was on duty (no continuity of care) and at the end of the 15 minute appointment
(currently appointments are as long as it takes) the woman would be presented
with a bill (currently maternity services are free in NZ). Babies would be
delivered at the appropriate birthing unit by whoever is on duty (no continuity
of care).
In order for GPs to achieve this though it is important to show why they need
to supervise midwives - to do this they need to have stories regularly in the
media of midwifery negligence - they have even stated that the report currently
withheld on midwifery care is damning - if its withheld how do they know? The
belief is in fact that this report shows that midwives are in fact exemplary in
their practice and this would not help the GPs case if released. As to the
media support - are the Press now supporting the doctors campaign?
Many argue that the issue is one of training - a GP has had longer training -
this is true, a GP studies for 5 years in the area of general practice - a
midwife studies for 3 and a half years in maternity care only. GPs do not
regularly deliver babies - midwives deliver around 60 babies per year
A friend of mine's wife, living in the UK is a midwife. She is in awe of the NZ
maternity system and it is held in high regard world-wide
The question is: who would you want delivering your most precious possession
and do you want to pay for the service?
If you support midwives be at the Square at lunchtime
