Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute is a non-profit organization that
empowers underserved K-12 students to think creatively, write effectively, and
succeed academically alongside a community of caring volunteers.
Overview of the position:
The Program Director oversees all educational programming at Mid-Continent
Oceanographic Institute (MOI), a youth writing center. This role includes
strategic direction, planning, implementing, and assessing all
academic/creative writing programs. These programs include field trips,
after-school homework help, in-school writing programs, Young Authors’ Book
Project, writing workshops, and MOI’s retail store. The Program Director works
with and reports to the Executive Director to support all aspects of MOI’s
operations including grant writing and reporting, event planning, fundraising,
staff and volunteer training, forging and maintaining partnerships with outside
schools and organizations, and program evaluation. The position requires
engaging with a diverse population of students, teachers, family members,
volunteers, and community members at large.
MOI seeks an individual with a passion for youth development, creative writing,
and closing the opportunity gap. This person is a dynamic leader, skilled
communicator, and an inspiration to others. The ideal candidate will be excited
about growing a small non-profit organization with connections to a national
network of creative writing and tutoring centers (826 National).
Position Description:
Program Development, Coordination and Evaluation (40%)
- Oversee all of MOI’s academic and creative writing programming including
development of original curricula and delivery of established MOI programs to
ensure quality support for the 2,000 students MOI will serve in the 18-19
school year.
- Oversee MOI’s volunteer department which trains and engages 50-100 members of
the community each year.
- Coordinate Young Authors’ Book Project (a published anthology of student
work) including volunteer recruitment, training, curriculum design, and
coordination with various stakeholders.
- Develop schedule of publications and other end-products for programs and
ensure high-quality execution of these products.
- Evaluate program effectiveness to ensure program quality improvement through
observation, surveys, and assessing student work.
- Oversee outreach to students, families, schools, and organization to ensure
student recruitment and engagement in MOI’s programs.
- Communicate regularly about MOI’s programs internally and externally.
- Develop new writing curricula, publishing projects, and collaborations with
schools and partners.
- Oversee pilot programs and partnerships and evaluate effectiveness.
Supervision (30%)
- Support and guide program staff in effective youth development practices.
- Supervise Americorps VISTAs working at MOI’s site, and MOI’s satellite
location at South High School.
- Oversee and develop other programming positions as needed.
- With support of Executive Director, provide professional development and
coaching to MOI staff.
- Oversee MOI’s internship programs for local high school, college, and
university students as well as community members.
- Provide support for trainings and orientations to various sized groups of
volunteers.
Community Relations (30%)
- In partnership with Executive Director, steward MOI brand and program
expansion.
- Assist with grant writing and reporting for program funding.
- Assist with special events.
- Be an advocate for MOI for donations, resources and support.
Required:
- Minimum of three years working in youth development with a diverse group of
youth in grades K-12.
- A passion for working with youth and an ability to lean into whimsy and fun
programming.
- Proficient with computer applications (google suite).
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
- Experience with Indesign and Photoshop.
- Experience with staff supervision.
- Experience with copy editing and publishing.
- Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or Somali.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams.
- Ability to travel independently and alone in the Twin Cities metro with
occasional US travel.
- Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
- Ownership of a cell phone to communicate with constituents, and a car to
travel to programming sites.
