have supported and worked to pass for years. This new law prohibits parking
large trucks, like semi-trucks, on any street in Minneapolis. Until last
Friday, it had been legal to park a large truck in any area not adjacent to
residential zoning.
We have now started on six months of education and outreach with drivers, to
let them know that this law has been passed, and to find new places to park
their trucks. In January, City staff will begin issuing tickets to trucks
parked in Minneapolis, and those fines will escalate over time.
Meanwhile, our staff in Economic Development will help anyone who wants to
create an off-street truck parking business to find an appropriate site. The
Council also directed our Intergovernmental Relations staff to work with MnDOT
and the Met Council to find a regional solution for this clearly regional
problem. I want to thank my colleague Jamal Osman, who represents the parts of
Cedar-Riverside and Seward that are in Ward 6, for bringing forward this
action, which I think was the right thing for the Council to do.
I am hopeful that this change will alleviate the real challenges and harms that
the excessive truck parking in the south Seward industrial area has caused. I
want to thank everyone β residents, business owners, truck drivers and more β
who have reached out to me over the years, and have helped bring us to this
solution. Please continue to reach out as we implement this new law.
