The back page of the new winter 2008 edition of 'Your Oxford' carries a full
page advert announcing five centres where tetrapak cartons can now be recycled.
but there isn't one in Headington!
Nearly liquid consummables come in tetrapaks which at the moment go to
landfill.
I have emailed recycling and await a reply.

Yes, this is a frustration. I have raised the lack of a facility in
Headington -- one of the most obvious places to have one -- several times
since their introduction in the spring. My understanding is that we are in
the hands of Tetrapak who have been persuaded to provide the recycling
facilities because otherwise their cartons are so difficult to get recycled.
They have provided five and no more. We can hope that their success
elsewhere will encourage the provision of a further one for Headington, but
we have had no luck so far. This is certainly something I'm pursuing.

Tetrapaks are made of cardboard are they not? and at present there is not much
of a market for cardboard as the price for cardboard has collapsed, better to
wait until the market recovers before doing anything about it anyway. Has the
Council thought of trying to sell the piles of used cans held in storage at
present back to the drinks manufacturers? and so then put the onus of recycling
the cans or dumping/disposing of them back on the manufacturers, then the
manufacturers would have to sell them to a recycler. That might make them
think a bit.
I use the Tetrapak recycling container behind Tesco's on the Cowley Road, as this is our nearest. Tetrapak do not empty it often enough, and it is always the most terrible mess: see attached photograph. Perhaps it's not such a bad thing after all that there isn't one in Headington.... I am not sure that the city council should be advertising these facilities until there are more of them in place, as the demand is so high and Tetrapak do not collect often enough. Incidentally, only four places (not five) are listed on the city council website: http://www.oxford.gov.uk/environment/recycling-bring-banks.cfm (don't bother to look if you are using the lastest version of Firefox, as it superimposes the columns). Just a reminder that you can recycle clothes and shoes in the recycling area behind Somerfield. And all the plastics that the city council won't take (i.e. non-bottles) can be taken there too. And inside Somerfield you can get a strong new plastic bag if you bring in six old ones to be recycled. So apart from Tetrapaks, we are quite well covered.
