Alan, Your comments are insulting. You seem pretty smug, residents lost
their Court battle to stop the 50% expansion of London City Airport. Annual
flights are increasing from 80,000 to 120,000.
You are insensitive to the plight of residents who have to put up with the
daily pain of noise and pollution. Newham has let people down and allowed
London City Airport to turn a residential area with great hopes into a
noise slum.
The new aircraft operating out of London City Airport are much noisier and
should never have been allowed in a residential area.
Alan, I would also like to correct you. The Fight the Flights campaign
objective was to oppose the planned expansion at the airport. The aim was
never to shut the airport down.
The failure was not due the residents campaign, but of the systemic road
blocks, failure of the ruling Labour party, elected officials and Newham
Council to stand up for the residents. Some serious questions have to be
asked about democracy in Newham, lobbying activities, why Newham
Councillors did nothing to help. Where was the Newham Recorder to bring
accountability?
Newham Council should hang its head in shame. When you look at other
campaign groups such as Heathrow who managed to stop the building of the
third runway. At Stansted the local residents managed to stop the building
of a second runway. Of course, these two successes had one thing in one
common, their local Council was supporting the residents. So you have to
ask what is wrong with Newham Council?
The case was pretty lousy, the new flights are to holiday destination, so
there was little economic justification.
The Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales has publicly supported expansion of
London City Airport stating the airport would create lots of jobs. Yes, to
date the number employed by the airport have increased from 498 to 525
(only a third of which are Newham residents). As for the latest vacancies,
there are 3 jobs advertised paying 9,800. Then one wonders why Newham high
streets are full of Pounds shops and fried chicken shops.
Newham Council must be delighted we have a brand new POUND SHOP opening up
in East Ham. We must have the Guinness book of records by now?.
Newham Council's enthusiasm for the airport has done trash the Royal Docks
and drive people out of the area. Robin Wales recently described Newham has
a 'transit camp', perhaps he should stand up and take the responsibility
for his actions.
It is no surprise the London Borough of Newham has the highest unemployment
in London, when they make such decisions.
Peter: It is one thing to use the London City Airport, but another to rub
it in people's face. For the record, I don't use the airport. You live in
East Ham, so what would you know about environmental impact?
Alan / Peter : You both sound like Labour party activist. Perhaps someone
can confirm this?
John: I am thankful to you for taking the time to post airport related
news. It is a pity, you seem to get flamed for your troubles.
