Chuck is right on this one.
Unfortunately in today's political atmosphere it seems that anything is
justified in the name of public safety. There was Alexander's arrogant
interview that was previously linked on this listserve where he
dismissed criticism as "there will always be naysayers" and seemed to
generally have that tone. *https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0865TqQBiiE*
**What I found most
revealing was his conclusion at the end about the need to protect
business interests.
Most recently there were the series of brutal demolitions of multiple
homeless encampments - right when it getting cold. As previous
discussions on this listserve illustrate, there is a substantial
constituency of middle income to well off Minneapolis residents who want
the homeless out-of-sight, but it is tragic that there are not enough
more humane voices of justice to prevail - or at least delegitimize and
derail the brutal oppression of the most vulnerable people in the community.
Now we have Alexander revealing his arrogance and contempt for the
members of the public expressed in the most blatant and unmistakable
terms. There are no beginner mistakes here. As the article references,
he is the highest paid government official in the history of Minneapolis
because of his presumed experience and expertise. The article also
documents that he has engaged in inappropriate personal social media
attacks in the past and has not learned any lessons before. Frey and
the cc have made a $300,000 mistake. Not nearly their most expensive
mistake, but one that they need to correct immediately before this guy
does more serious damage.

Thanks to the past charter commission and the narrow victory of their “strong
mayor” charter amendment, only the mayor or Alexander himself can terminate his
employment now ---- even if all 13 of the council members wanted him out.

Some of his comments in the Fox9 interview: "This is not a time to criticize",
"It's the naysayers", "There will be people who want to move forward" , "We've
got to move forward together".
I have two questions I wish the interviewer would have asked. How does he
define "public safety"? And What does he mean by "move forward"?
One can use all the feel good terms one wants but they don't mean anything
unless defined.

Cam, couldn't the Council refuse to fund the Office of Community Safety in the
2023 budget? I realize they've already confirmed Alexander for a four-year
term, but with no funds for the office, maybe he'd leave.

“What I found most revealing was his conclusion at the end about the need to
protect business interests.
Most recently there were the series of brutal demolitions of multiple
homeless encampments - right when it getting cold. As previous
discussions on this listserve illustrate, there is a substantial
constituency of middle income to well off Minneapolis residents who want
the homeless out-of-sight, but it is tragic that there are not enough
more humane voices of justice to prevail - or at least delegitimize and
derail the brutal oppression of the most vulnerable people in the community.”
My response: I think it is much too early to pass judgment on the
qualifications of Cedric Alexander to do the job he was hired for. He did a
complete one-eighty on his support for police officers in the past couple of
years.

It is not the Commissioner of Public Safety’s responsibility to decide whether
or not to protect business interests. That is solely in the hands of the
politicians, who are voted in and out by the citizens of Minneapolis. It is,
however, essential for all of the residents of Minneapolis, that business
interests are protected though. That is the only way we are going to have a tax
base sufficient to pay for any and all of the services all the residents of
Minneapolis expect, including public safety.
It is also the politicians who are responsible for making the decision to clear
homeless encampments. Cedric Alexander and the MPD have nothing to say about
it, except like other citizens of Minneapolis, assuming he is one, he can vote
for the politicians who can and do make those decisions.
I have not made up my mind whether or not he should have the Job of
Commissioner of Public Safety. Actions speak louder than words, and I have yet
to see much action beyond placing nine squad cars on Nicolette Ave, which,
actually, seems like a pretty good idea. At least they are doing something. And
as far as the vehicles being empty, we don’t know if that was just for show or
whether the officers were out walking around. Either way, not a bad idea as far
as I can tell.
Unless his words were racist or threatened violence, I think he should be
allowed to speak his mind, although perhaps he should make it clear he is
speaking for himself and not the city. If residents are overly concerned with
those comments, perhaps we, like him, should develop thicker skins.
I do agree his salary is way too much, but Alexander did not decide what his
salary would be. Again, that is a decision made exclusively by politicians, who
the citizens of Minneapolis vote for or against.
Many of the problems you blame on Alexander and the MPD are the fault of the
Mayor and the City Council. I didn't vote for any of them, and I ran against
Jacob Frey in 2017.
I think that it is interesting that everyone who has expressed criticisms of
Alexander, at least on this forum, including you Jordan, are, as far as I can
tell, white and are speaking for no one but themselves. Those who have shown
support for him are people from organizations made up almost exclusively of
African Americans. They include Bridgette Stewart from Agape, Lisa Clemons from
A Mothers Love, and Al Flowers from Unity Community Mediation Services. They
are all leaders in the Black community, which has been the most affected by the
violence in their neighborhoods.
According to CBS News, “Shortly after Alexander's apology, leaders from Agape,
A Mother's Love, and the Unity Community Mediation Team held a press conference
defending Alexander.
‘Dr. Alexander, we need him. Everybody can make a little error here or there,
but don't you hold that to that.’ said Ian Bethel with the UCMT.
‘This is what's important - it's not important to get on Twitter, arguing about
things that aren't a factor in saving people's lives,’ said Al Flowers.”
Amity Foster and Jim Kruzitski also who were arguing with Alexander, on
Twitter, also appear to be white. Here is a link to a photo of Amity Foster
wearing an ISIAIH button. ISAIAH is an organization that is one-sided in its
criticism of the police. Foster is similarly involved with Take Action
Minnesota which is also one-sided in its criticism of the police. Alexander may
have encountered Foster on previous occasions, which may have prompted his
allegation of her being “two-faced,” and implying that she is antipolice. Below

Perhaps Police Commissioner Gorden can light up the bat signal and get help in
fighting the overdose carnage in Minneapolis So far this year there have been
over 2,000 overdoses and 102 deaths. Many of these victims are the most
vulnerable, including the homeless.
The dealers, if and when caught, can be tried for murder...Justice served, but
a bit problematic if you struggling to lower crime stats.
