Awards Panel for Let’s Walk Bedminster
Please join the Awards Panel to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the
applications for LWB funding. This will be held at Southville Centre on
Monday, 13 April from 7.30pm sharp. It’s very important that we get a good
cross-section of local people to make these recommendations. No particular
knowledge is required, just a bit of common sense. This is your chance to be
really helpful in the community.
Let’s Walk Bedminster
Several community organisations are working on improvements to the street
scene, including the applications to be considered on 13 April, to encourage
more people to walk in our community rather than staying in doors or using cars
for short distances. Resources for this are coming from several sources, but
the main resource is comes from the ideas and energy of local people. We’ll
be posting summaries of activity on the website www.bedminster.org.uk . An
initial listing is attached, but we know there are more things going on than
are on the list. Please send me additional information and up-dates when you
can.
Cuppa with FroGS
The City Council has just released a tender for creating a café in Greville
Smyth Park. The Park is sorely in need of a café to provide parents, kids,
dog walkers, teens, seniors and others with a place to enjoy a hot or cold
drink and a snack and to serve as a community hub. The Friends of Greville
Smyth Park (FroGS) encourages local businesses and individuals to consider
applying for this concession. See the attachment.
To apply and find out more visit https://www.proactisplaza.com/supplierportal
under ‘View Opportunities’. This link gives you an overview of the tenders.

AGM in June
GBCP’s Annual General Meeting will be on June 24. That means that a new
group of directors will take over the leadership of GBCP. Of course, some of
the ‘new’ board members will be existing members, but we also hope to have a
few new new members. Contact Ben if you want to find out what being on the
board of GBCP amounts to. Is this your chance to make a difference in your
community?
GoodGym wants to help your project
GoodGym combines getting fit with doing good. They organise group runs to
projects where some physical volunteering is needed and then run back again.
They meet at 6.30pm on Tuesdays and at 11am on Saturdays. They usually look
for tasks which will last 30-45 minutes, but for groups up to 20. This
includes digging, chopping back brambles and other vegetation, litter picking,
delivering flyer, sorting stock and much else. For more information contact
<email obscured> or 07857 425667.
Better Bedminster Community Chest
The current round is now underway. Application packs with full details can be

New Public Garden in Bedminster
Have your say!! The barren, grey car park that has fronted Windmill Hill
City Farm for many years is about to be transformed into a verdant and
welcoming garden. Initial sketch plans have been drawn up, funds are in place
and an invitation issued to local people to input their ideas about the design
details. You can comment on line by visiting
http://www.windmillhillcityfarm.org.uk/blog/a-new-public-garden-for-bedminster
or in person by visiting the City Farm where design sketches will be on display
to the end of April.
Bristol University Vision & Falls Research
Drs Ute Leonards and George Stothart are working with GBCP on a research
project that investigates the effects of dementia on the ability to process
visual clues and the impact of the designed environment on that ability as it
relates to falls and falls prevention. We think that this work will be of
interest to several GBCP partner groups and links to aspirations such as making
Greater Bedminster Bristol’s first Age-friendly neighbourhood, Let’s Walk
Bedminster and improvements to the Business Improvement District.
A first meeting is aimed at professionals working with older people and will be
held on Wednesday, 6 May (2-4pm) at Southville Centre. Ute and George will
outline their research project and highlight how local organisations can
support that work and become more involved.
Please RSVP to <email obscured> on, or before, Friday 1 May
so that we know who’s coming and can order refreshments. See the attachment.
Road Safety in Bristol
A 10 year plan (2015-24) has just been published by BCC. See their website.
It rejects the idea of ‘accident’ for the concept of ‘collision with a cause’.
For killed or seriously injured in 2013 it reports 40 pedestrians, 19 cyclists,
31 motorcyclists and 16 motor vehicle occupants. The travel mode least likely
to cause injury to others, even in a collision, is the one most likely to suffer
it. Note the ‘fatal four’ : speed; impairment through drink, drugs and
fatigue; failure to wear a seatbelt or protective clothing or a helmet and
distraction (eg chatting on your mobile while driving).
