I think what David is doing is very important.
My own vision for the new Christchurch: "1st City of the 21st Century"
By that, I mean, the first city that's thought seriously about what it
means to live in the 21st Century, and to design itself for that
purpose. Sadly I don't think we're doing that.
It's inevitable is guess, but we're trapped in our 20th Century heads,
and we're intent on rebuilding a greener 20th Century city, from what I
can see. Commitment to a building new convention centre and associated
hotels is a prime example. The idea of a covered stadium for big events
might be another.
In a debt restrained, energy restrained world, where economies refuse to
"grow" some of the things we would have "liked" in the recent past, will
no longer be possible. However, given the new restraints, new
possibilities do arise that we could design into our future, if we can
resist wasting our resources on white elephants.
