strike: âThe union since 2011 has seen contract negotiations as an opportunity
to improve their schools, not simply increase their wages.â

The list of non-wage proposals is simply a tactic to improve their negotiating
position. The success of the Chicago teachers in 2012
(http://tinyurl.com/yazjdf84) has been widely discussed as the playbook for
this tactic. For the teachers to demand additional staff is unlike anything you
would see in the private sector. Adding staff and increasing wages at the same
time is not going to work, so which do they really want? I think we know -
salary increases.
Now I don't fault the union or anybody else for using tactics that work, but
I'm disappointed that the Pioneer Press doesn't report more objectively on this
topic.
