A letter in last Friday's Oxford Times from Bruce Heagerty referred to a
project for re-development in Frideswide Square. It suggested that an executive
called Andy Wilkins of Spring Residential, the same company which has been
making such a nuisance of itself to the residents of Jericho, now has his eye
on another site and has been consulting with our city planning officers,
including the now notorious Michael Crofton-Briggs. Does anybody know any more
about this?
The plans for Frideswide Square have been publicized in the local press: see: http://www.oxfordmail.net/display.var.2291568.0.100m_gateway_scheme_for_city.php Certainly according to that article Andy Wilkins, the Managing Director of "Spring", is heavily involved.
Thank you, Stephanie, having looked at the link article I realize that this is
all part of the demented-cemented Westgate Scheme.
There is one thing in Frideswide Square that certainly merits being pulled down
- the absolutely hideous and ghastly Said Business School. It is one of the
worst pieces of architecture in Oxford. It looks like a pile of cans of baked
beans in a supermarket. It would be bad enough anywhere but it is particularly
out of place in an heritage city. When I moved to Oxford there was still that
nice old Victorian railway station and a row of inoffensive, useful little
shops along the street as you walked from there to the town centre.
Now there is a wilderness of uncrossable streets and traffic lights created by
- the Planners.
The more the planners and architects get their hands on an area, the worse it
becomes. They spend hundreds of millions of pounds of public money - our money
- to inflict their megalomaniac designs on us.
