I just received this press release (see below)
from US Postal Service contact, Nicole Hill,
that our Minnehaha Station Post Office will be
rebuilding at SAME location 3033 27th Avenue S,
Mpls, MN, 55406.
This is great news. Just yesterday I saw
2 surveyors at the Minnehaha Post Office
taking land measurements. They said they were
from a survey co. that won the subcontract for
a bid, yet didn’t know the landowner doing the
contracting. He said banks typically use such
land survey measures to determine whether
to close on a bank loan. This press release
solves that mystery.
One way we can follow rebuilding progress is to
track city inspection permits of which there
are none so far and which we can monitor.
Also not discussed in the press release,
it is very likely that the private owners, Ehlen
Associates, Bloomington, MN will sell the land
to the USPS, making it public.
The previous Minnehaha Post Office was built
in 1970 and served us well for 50 yrs. It is less
known that the Minnehaha Post Office has stood
on that land since 1927, albeit in the next
land parcel over, where Glass Endeavors (built
1932) sits today.
Can anyone verify that yet another version of
Minnehaha Post Office in the 1950s & 60s was
located on the land parcel just north of the 1970
PO, in building where Migizi was housed (same
Bldg as Gandhi Mahal, built 1922) ??? This long
history of our Post Office on that corner is
important, as is the entire “27th and Lake” block,
all of which should be on Mpls Preservation
Heritage List.
It seems the George Floyd Uprising, has brought
awareness of the necessity for desegregating the
entire Minn-Lake and Hi-Lake areas, and indeed,
all of Minneapolis/St Paul. Growing more commons,
cooperative, indy, and public gathering places
like the Post Office and E. Lake public
library just around the corner, can bridge our
isolation and CREATE space for diverse peoples
to connect and find our common humanity.
The Post Office is only the beginning in
determining what happens to the 30 remaining
destroyed properties at Minnehaha-Lake,
at least 10 of which are now empty lots. Our
strength lies in the unity of our community
(black, brown, indigenous, people of color,
and white) to create this transformation.

> USPS Makes Final Decision on the Location of South Minneapolis’ Minnehaha
Post Office
>
> MINNEAPOLIS, MN- The United States Postal Service (USPS) has made the
decision to rebuild the Minnehaha Post Office in South Minneapolis in the same
location, 3033 27th Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55406, as it has been since 1970.
>
> While there is not a current construction timeline, all services will
continue to operate out of the temporary facility located at 10 W. Lake Street,
Minneapolis, MN 55408, until further notice. We thank all who have made it
their mission to represent the community and those that provided written
feedback while USPS navigated the options for the Minnehaha Post Office.
>
> When the project is completed, the Minnehaha Post Office will provide a
full-service retail and house local mail delivery operations. Customers can
expect to receive the same level of service from their own community as they
have in the past.
>
> While the Postal Service is sensitive to the impact of this decision on its
customers and the community, the Postal Service properly considered community
input and this decision is consistent with Postal Service objectives. Postal
Service operations are not supported by tax dollars. To be self-sustaining, the
Postal Service must make decisions that ensure it provides adequate and
affordable postal services in a manner that is as efficient and economical as
possible.
>
> This is the final decision of the Postal Service with respect to this matter,
and there is no right to further administrative or judicial review of this
decision.
>
> The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies
on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
