The Bridge and Mshale, two of our community media partners, published
thoughtful and thought-provoking articles this week on the murder of a
Somali teen in the Cedar-Riverside area in April, and the views of
friends and community as the search for the shooter continues. Read
"Somali teen's murder unearths generational conflict in community," by
Edwin Okong'o in Mshale and "Cedar-Riverside mourns death of Somali
teen," by Jeremy Stratton in The Bridge.

The name Minnesota sur Seine is a clever play on words meaning
Minnesota on the scene, hinting at the great Seine River running
through Paris. The Minnesota sur Seine Festival, entering its fourth
year, is gaining a reputation as a place to experience riveting
collisions of musical styles in some of the Twin Cities coolest venues.

The Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative Christian nonprofit based in
Arizona that receives funding from Focus on the Family, sent a legal

"Welcoming Schools" curriculum that they are currently considering for
implementation at Hale, a K-5 school, and Jefferson, a K-8 school.

zero-interest, zero-payment loans are forgiven at a rate of 20 percent
each year.

Opening the door to early learning
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/11266
by Thomas Hammell, Session Weekly
It's hard to disagree that it's a good thing to have children ready to
learn when they start kindergarten. The question is how to get all
children ready, when economic factors, types of child care and early
childhood learning opportunities vary so greatly.
Music note: Quilombolas play music from the Americas and beyond
http://tcdailyplanet/node/11019
by Sheila Regan, TC Daily Planet
Quilombolas are descendants of slaves who escaped their slave
plantations in Brazil. True to the spirit of their name, the
Minneapolis band Quilombolas have a sense of defiance, and also a
sense of freedom.
Roses are red, violets are blue ... but are cut flowers green?
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/11267
by Kelly Westhoff, Minnesota Women's Press
Fresh floral arrangements bring a burst of color and elegance to any
party. But are they a green party choice? Some say no. They argue cut
flowers quickly die, adding to party waste. Plus, let's face it, long-
stem calla lilies are gorgeous, but they don't exactly grow in
Minnesota. Vast amounts of fuel are needed to get those pretty white
blooms here.

by Jeremy Stratton, The Bridge
Somali elders, youth and other members of the Cedar-Riverside
community braved the unseasonable weather and snow on Saturday, April
26, to gather beneath the towers of Riverside Plaza, half a block from
the scene of the April 11 killing of Abdullahi Ayil Abdi.

Bridge investigation deserves transparency
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/11319
by Conrad deFiebre, Minnesota 2020
When a busy interstate highway bridge falls down, the public is
entitled to a straightforward explanation of what went wrong,
untainted by political considerations. Unfortunately, the clearly
partisan wrangling over the federal investigation of the deadly
collapse of the I-35W span indicates that may not be the case this time.
