Public Talk on Climate Change in Bangladesh Wednesday 7 May @ 10am
Venue: Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton
* Free entry *
Brighton & Hove City Council welcomes Khodeza Rume, Oxfam project worker from
Bangladesh, to talk about her experiences fighting the effects of climate
change in Bangladesh.
Rume works to help poor communities living close to the major rivers in a
region which is becoming increasingly vulnerable to unpredictable and
devastating floods and river bank erosion. Bangladesh, through which many of
the region's major rivers flow before reaching the ocean, is perhaps the single
country most threatened by the changing climate; in addition to flooding and
erosion inland, the coastal areas are also inundated by tidal surges and
cyclones.
Her talk will focus on the work she is doing to fight the effects of climate
change in Bangladesh by helping people to prepare for frequent flooding. She
will be explaining how Oxfam is helping fight climate poverty in Bangladesh, by
helping communities to adapt and learn skills to protect homes and livelihoods
from flooding and cyclones. Rume will also discuss the need to campaign at a
local national and international level for people affected by flooding in
Bangladesh.

Consultation on new City Sustainability Partnership running for 3 months from
1st May to 31st July
Under Brighton & Hove City Councils new constitution, it has been proposed that
the Sustainability Commission be replaced by a new City Sustainability
Partnership, reporting to the 2020 Community Partnership, with about 20
members, four of them councillors.
Draft Terms of Reference for this partnership have been agreed (below, with
added links) for consultation, which will run for three months from May 1, 2008
to July 31, 2008.
The council is inviting views about this partnership idea, about the proposed
terms of reference and about the membership.
After the consultation, the responses will be used to prepare recommendations
for finalising the new Partnership arrangements, which will then be decided by
the Chairs of the 2020 Community Partnership - currently Roger French (Chair),
Leader of the Conservative Group, Cllr Mary Mears, and Chris Todd (both
vice-chairs). All with a view to the new Partnership getting established after
the summer break.
All views are welcome.
