McCain Picks Palin for VP

I have to believe that this was not a good choice for McCain. It has the
appearance of being a cheap shot in the game of gender politics to try to peel
off Hillary Clinton voters. The McCain ads run during the Democratic convention
show this was much on Republican strategists’ minds.
Sarah Palin is a political unknown. She’s been governor of Alaska for less
than two years. Because she supports drilling in the Alaska wildlife refuge
area, maybe her selection strengthens McCain’s commitment to that part of his
energy program - but to the possible detriment of his support for increasing
renewable sources of energy.
Palin is currently focus of a mini-scandal involving a call from the Governor’s
office to try to get a state trooper fired who was involved in a contentious
divorce case. That Jerry Springer-like aspect of her public persona hardly
befits inclusion on a national ticket.
In short, even though Sarah Palin seems like a solid person who might some day
attain political prominence, the circumstances do not seem right for that to
happen at this particular time. Now, of course, Palin’s selection may be a
survey-driven decision that will, in fact, sway female voters and win the
election for McCain. It just doesn’t look good to me.
