I backed well-laid out arguments concerning late bar hours, and I can't presume
to know the impetus behind Rep. Phylis Kahn's proposal regarding bar hours. But
I won't sit back and allow an attempt to malign her position in opposition to a
the football field proposed for Nicollet Island.
Dave's characterized that issue as Rep. Kahn being "deathly opposed to a small
high school having a football field near her house - because of the noise and
inconvenience."
If it were not for the Strib "managing" the information regarding the issue,
the
public in general might know that the issue was the location of the field on a
pivotal spot within the St. Anthony Falls Historic District. The project is
slated for a regional and National Park and was opposed by the National Park
Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the MN Historical
Society, the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota and the Sierra Club NOT because
they oppose DeLaSalle or sports, but because this location defies federal,
state
and local regulations specifically put in place to protect the Historic
District
and the Mississippi Critical Area.
On the other hand, those powering this facility through for "a small high
school" named DeLaSalle represented possibly the broadest political and
religious connections behind an issue that was not "political in the normal
sense," i.e. abortion or gay rights.
Despite the characterizations by DeLaSalle proponents, this was never just a
Rep. Kahn NIMBY issue.
If there is information concerning Rep. Kahn's support of extending bar hours,
let's address that and the arguments surrounding the issue itself.
No matter what the issue, "pulling a Soucheray" does not further the
discussion.
