FORECAST: A new era
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/11486
by Betsy Mowry, TC Daily Planet
30 years ago, a partnership between the Minneapolis Arts Commission
and the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) inadvertantly
launched one of the most active and broad-reaching arts organizations
in the Twin Cities, FORECAST Public Artworks. Based in St. Paul,
FORECAST works to advance public art by supporting artists and
providing assistance and education to neighborhoods, businesses and
communities.

The Daily Planet turned two years old on May 1, marking two years of
constant growth and change. Our front page changes daily, featuring an
average of eight to ten stories from community media partners and
citizen journalists. New media tools range from Google maps to
Twitter, offering increasing interactivity for our growing community
of readers, writers and viewers.
Teacher cuts decimate state education

Budget cuts are forcing school districts statewide to lay off up to 15
percent of their teachers.

On May 5 at Pillsbury House in South Minneapolis, the Hope
Collaborative invited community members to a presentation by
representatives from YES Prep Public School. The presentation is part
of an ongoing effort to bring in schools to share their success
stories working with students who have a history of educational
difficulties.

How wealthy is Minnesota's congressional delegation?
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/11524
by Paul Demko, Minnesota Monitor
Today is the deadline for members of Congress to file their 2008
personal financial disclosure forms. The documents aren't required to
be posted electronically at present so it will be some time before
they're readily available to the public. But a new web site created by
the Sunlight Foundation provides some interesting insight into the
personal wealth of Minnesota's Congressional delegation.

Acadia Cafe: Shades of the New Riv

by Jeremy Iggers, The Rake
I felt a twinge of nostalgia the other night when I stopped in for a
bite at the Acadia Caf, which recently moved from Franklin and
Nicollet to Cedar and Riverside. Back in my college days and for
many years after, the space was home to the New Riverside Caf, run by
an anarchist collective. In the early years, there were no fixed
prices you were supposed to "Eat what you need, pay what you can
afford." A sign invited customers to practice dishwashing yoga, and I
did, once or twice.

Life lessons

When young Joan Dauphinee asked her father if she should become a
chiropractor like him, his response was blunt. "He said, 'No. You're a
girl,'" she recalled. "That was enough to dissuade me." It was likely
the last time she was ever dissuaded from her chosen path. Dauphinee,
57, has determinedly pursued a life of teaching and learning filled
with both accomplishments and difficult challenges. Through it all,
her resolute spirit and irreverent sense of humor have earned the deep
love and respect of family, colleagues and students for the woman they
affectionately call 'Dauph.'

TC Art: Thai art at Art-a-Whirl

by Paul Schmelzer, Eyeteeth
One of the many challenges facing artists today (and always) is how to
do what you love and be able to pay the rent. For my wife Mok and I,
we're rolling several endeavors together, under the aegis of Mok
Studio, and they'll all be on view this weekend at Art-a-Whirl, the
three-day art crawl in Northeast Minneapolis.
