Paul and I covered each others' sixes for...dang,
close to a decade, here, on these E-Democracy forums.
We made great sport of competing amongst ourselves to
see who Terrell Brown could suspend more often, for
the skeeziest of motives; Paul won, of course.
He kept his sense of humor about him, even the last
time I saw him, in the last two months or so.
In all seriousness - as I've followed the course of
his illness, I hoped, like everyone that knew and
cared about him, that he'd make it far enough up the
queue for a new liver in time. My college choir
director received a liver transplant in the early
eighties (he is in fact the longest-lived recipient in
the world), and the procedure is truly miraculous; I
hoped intensely to see Paul get the new lease on life
that it would have afforded him.
I urge you to direct your thoughts, prayers, or
whatever it is you believe in to Paul's wife Laura,
who has stood by Paul for all these difficult years
with the kind of grace that you hope and pray you can
find in yourself, as well as their kids.
And take this opportunity to make sure you're a donor;
your healthy liver (drink less, people!) can save a
couple of lives thanks to the new partial-liver
transplants.
While the American Liver Association is not the most
effective of charities, the Minnesota Medical Research
Foundation is highly regarded, and works in this areas
(among many, many others).

I'm sure they could put a donation to good use.
