I am a current member of the Executive Committee whose appointed term is
expiring with this annual meeting. I needed to make the choice whether to run
for continued service in one of the elected positions, or to step down now. I
have decided to step down. I'd like to explain my thinking a bit, because I
have found my service with this committee to be interesting, congenial, and
rewarding in the sense of a feeling of having contributed. Why stop now? Two
major reasons: The appointed positions are meant to be used to achieve some
kind of balance on the EC that would otherwise be lacking; at the time I was
appointed it seemed worthwhile to have political party diversity (I was on the
IP state committee) and geographic diversity (suburban Ramsey County); I now
call myself a DFLer, and the geographic diversity doesn't really seem that
important any more. Second reason, I'm turning 72 years old next month and
don't have as much energy as I once had. I encourage anyone, especially
energetic St. Paulites, who can catch the enthusiasm for turning the Internet
into a source of strength and wisdom for local government and community action,
to run for election at this time. There is much to be accomplished and learned
here, and there are thoughtful, public-spirited, creative, occasionally
passionate people to work with. If you have any questions I might be able to
answer from the perspective of an imminent drop-out, please give me a call --
651 210 6114 -- and if you ask me questions I can't knowledgeably answer, I'll
admit it and refer you to Tim Erickson, which isn't a bad way to go anyway.
Just do it! My experience says you'll be glad you did.
