odd odor

A question for you all, stemming from an odd event that occurred last Friday. A
neighbor, whose house fronts on 43rd just above Hiawatha golf course came home
and walked into her tucked-under garage to discover what she described as an
overwhelming "bizarre sweet anti-freeze kind of smell" that immediately gave
her a headache. More than a little freaked, she called Centerpoint; the tech
came by and immediately determined it wasn't gas (and said he'd never
encountered anything like it). When she mentioned it to an acquaintance who's a
contractor he said he'd heard (apocryphally) that sometimes manufacturing
companies dump waste into the storm sewers of Friday -- and her house is
positioned right above one of the big storm outlets that lead into the lake.
The smell dissapated in a few hours and hasn't recurred.
The question: Anyone else ever encountered something like this? Heard of it?
(The address line if for identification purposes only -- I'm not necessarily
trolling for a story for the Strib here.)
